E’ dura la vita della moglie di un diplomatico. Felice se vista dall’esterno, dall’interno si rivela invece nient’altro che una gabbia dorata infarcita di noia, continui traslochi da una nazione all’altra, occasioni ufficiali delle quali si farebbe volentieri a meno, frequenti e prolungate assenze del marito e... tradimenti? Un attimo: e tutte quelle riunioni straordinarie, le sere di lavoro all’Ambasciata, i pranzi con i rappresentanti dei Governi alleati...? Ci sorge un dubbio. Riguardiamo bene il titolo del libro: accidenti, non ce n’eravamo accorti. Ipnotizzati dalla spiritosa e colorata copertina e dalla gamma cromatica scelta per titolo e sfondo, avevamo distrattamente letto un ben più innocente “passaporto”. Dunque Jeremy Smith, deceduto a neppure 50 anni dopo un’onorata carriera da diplomatico ed infine da Ambasciatore, era un... fedifrago? E seriale, per giunta?
Purtroppo per Maggie, la vedova, questo è esattamente ciò che risulta dalla lettura dei tanti diari che Jeremy ha tenuto durante gli anni del loro matrimonio, e che solo dopo la sua morte sono saltati fuori. Maggie è già una donna sbiadita e senza particolari stimoli, ed anche il suo amore per Jeremy, come si capisce, è già da tempo spento per effetto della scarsa presenza di lui. Ciò nonostante, l’idea di essere stata tradita per anni e costantemente con quattro donne “parallele” (l’austriaca Minnie, la francese Delphine, l’italiana Arabella e l’ungherese Ilonka), la riempie di rabbia e di rancore verso il marito, ma anche verso le quattro approfittatrici. La vendetta è l’unica strada percorribile per pareggiare i conti e lasciarsi definitivamente alle spalle il passato. La vendicatrice, però, ha bisogno di aiuto: coinvolge così nel suo progetto Zoltan, l’autista ungherese che conosceva i segreti di Jeremy e che, malgrado l’iniziale titubanza, è ben felice di avere la possibilità di unire a quella di Maggie la propria vendetta personale per alcuni trattamenti indegni ricevuti dalle quattro signore.
La vedova non bada a spese: intraprende con Zoltan i viaggi e gli spostamenti necessari, soggiorna nelle varie città il tempo che ci vuole ed inventa volta per volta un’originale e pertinente (ma non per questo meno terribile) vendetta per ciascuna delle amanti. In bilico fra la voglia di uscire dalla sua precedente vita, che la porta a cambiare modo di vestire e taglio di capelli ed a mostrarsi da subito tranquilla e rilassata con grande disapprovazione delle vecchie conoscenze, ed il legame imprescindibile che ancora sente per il marito e che le fa temere la sua disapprovazione ad ogni atto perpetrato nei confronti delle quattro donne, Maggie stringe comunque i denti e va avanti. Nel suo processo di liberazione incontra non solo una vera e propria famiglia (Simona, la fidanzata romana di Zoltan, e suo fratello, nonché la sua fedele domestica Esmeralda) che le riempie la vita sostituendo, in pratica, il figlio mai avuto, ma trova anche, forse un nuovo amore... Ma è la stoccata finale di Jeremy, che riesce, nonostante tutto, a vincere, che lascia con l’amaro in bocca.
Al contrario di quello che si può pensare, il romanzo è scritto con uno stile molto sobrio, decisamente "inglese", perfino un poco malinconico, a rispecchiare la tristezza nell’animo di Maggie. A divertire sono soprattutto le trovate, fantasiose e paradossali, della vendicativa vedova. Un libro certamente originale per una dose di buonumore in salsa anglosassone.
