Ha preso confidenza prima con l’acqua salata e solo più avanti con le strade. Ha solcato le onde prima di percorrere una statale. Gherardo Scapinelli di Léguigno è veneziano, la prima automobile l’ha incontrata ch’era più che adolescente e pare sia stato un impatto. Quante ne ha fatte sul mare, a nuoto, a mollo, a vela, a motore, qualcosa anche sotto, da subacqueo. E quante ne scrive, nell’antologia di vita marinara pubblicata dalle Edizioni La Torre dei Venti, del Gruppo Tabula Fati di Chieti. Il vento viene sempre di prua. Vere storie di mare e di costa (novembre 2022, collana Zefiro, 192 pagine) è il racconto a episodi e siparietti autoironici e divertenti di un’esistenza condotta sempre con la prua rivolta alle onde, tra il 1967 e il 2022.
Sull’elemento liquido Gherardo Scapinelli c’è nato, cullato due volte al giorno dal salire e scendere delle maree nei canali della città lagunare alla quale è legatissimo.
Gente decisamente originale questi veneziani. È per giunta di buona famiglia il nostro narratore di avventure marinare di metà Novecento e oltre, erede per parte paterna di ottimati dell’ex Serenissima Repubblica. Papà Giorgio è stato un ufficiale pluridecorato nella Seconda Guerra mondiale, tanto più che il doppio cognome nobiliare sembra perfetto per una fiorente carriera nella Marina Militare.
Scapinelli figlio, diplomato all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, ha frequentato diciassettenne la scuola di vela atlantica francese Les Glenans ed è stato istruttore nel futuro Centro Velico di Caprera prima di servire nell’Arma navale, sul cacciatorpediniere lanciamissili Impavido, e di lavorare da sommozzatore per una società di piattaforme petrolifere fino a diventarne responsabile commerciale. Poi capo operativo di una ditta di assistenza internazionale, ha fondato in Grecia un’azienda di trasporti (sostanze pericolose). Noto velista, sposato con una bella comasca, ha due figlie e vive tra Como, Sardegna e Venezia. Parla inglese, francese, spagnolo, anche greco seppure con meno padronanza.
“Sono Veneziano!” afferma con orgoglio, presentando i suoi racconti, proposti dapprima ai rispettabilissimi frequentatori delle sale del Circolo Unione sul Canal Grande e ora agli altrettanto rispettabili avventori delle sue pagine, che sanno di salmastro.
Nascere e crescere a Venezia non è solo un privilegio ma imprime un marchio d’origine, assicura. Sono fatti di un’argilla diversa questi connazionali tirati su ad “ombre” e “cicchetti”. Appartengono alla prima delle tre categorie in cui si divide l’umanità sotto il campanile di San Marco: Veneziano puro, Mezzo Veneziano, Foresto.
“Siamo differenti”: un bambino veneziano può giocare e correre vicino a un canale, non cadrà mai in acqua, e se una mamma dice al figliolo di stare attento è una di fuori. Lo stesso vale per gli adulti, reduci dall’osteria: barcollo, ma non vado a mollo. E poi un veneziano non appoggia l’intera pianta del piede sui gradini dei ponti, solo la prima parte della scarpa, per dare più spinta con meno fatica.
Il racconto di Gherardo Scapinelli parte dalla democratizzazione della vela in Italia, aperta alla passione di tanti da un’iniziativa della Marina Militare. Era appannaggio di pochi autodidatti, finché Vittorio di Sambuy non ha inventato nell’estate 1965 i corsi di vela nell’Accademia Navale di Livorno, riservati ai figli di ufficiali di Marina. Tra quei ragazzini c’era anche Gherardo, che ha poi frequentato il prestigioso Centre Nautique des Glénans in Bretagna e collaborato alla scuola velica del ventoso arcipelago di Caprera.
Ricordo anch’io, in un’estate dei primi anni Ottanta, degli ometti volenterosi agguantati a gusci minuscoli. Noi invidiavamo la loro libertà (presunta) di muoversi a piacimento nel complesso militare senza il rigore di restare nei ranghi e la goffa corsetta obbligatoria negli spostamenti individuali. Quei ragazzini guardavano sospirando gli allievi, degli "arrivati" ai loro occhi.
Si diceva del tono costantemente spiritoso, a cominciare dalle cadute in mare, tra l’imbarazzo dell’improvvido velista scivolato e l’ilarità dei lupi di mare astanti. E poi i massicci attacchi aerei di stormi compatti di gabbiani, a sfiorare le teste con sicurezza provocatoria. E la grigliata mista collettiva di gente d’ogni grado, a bordo di Nave Impavido nel Mare di Sicilia, dopo lo scampato pericolo di brutta figura per qualcuno. La scialuppa calata per acquistare pesce fresco da un peschereccio aveva rischiato di finire ingloriosamente a fondo, con i quattro che l’armavano, Scapinelli compreso, sommersa a pelo d’acqua dal pescato rovesciato dalla rete spalancata sopra il battello.
C’è di tutto, non solo gioie, anche dolori e stati d’animo poco rassicuranti, fra le pagine di Il vento viene sempre di prua. Vere storie di mare e di costa, perché il mare sa essere impietoso, qualche volta ostile. Ricorrono anche ricordi del grande Ernest Hemingway, nell’Harry’s Bar, suo covo veneziano. Il suo grande amore era Adriana Ivancich, sorella della mamma pittrice di Gherardo che gli ha ispirato racconti e libri. Un episodio? Preso in giro a quattro anni dal grande scrittore per i capelli ricci e lunghi, gli rifilò un pugno al mento facendo ricredere il provocatore: “assolutamente, non sei una bambina”.
Da quel momento diventarono grandi amici. Il piccolo parlucchiava inglese per via della baby sitter australiana e tutte le volte che Ernest tornava a Venezia, da zia Adriana, gli portava sempre qualcosa. Una volta cioccolata amara, un’altra un costume da cowboy introvabile in Italia, che gli valse il primo premio per le mascherine a Carnevale. Gli ha dedicato anche un "delizioso" racconto per bambini, sul figlio del Leone di San Marco.
