La libertà possibile (Fazi, 2019 traduzione di Arianna Pelagalli) è il romanzo d’esordio della scrittrice Margaret Wilkerson Sexton, nata e cresciuta a New Orleans e quindi particolarmente toccata, anche per le proprie origini, dalle tematiche delle persone di colore.
La narrazione verte attorno alle vicende di tre generazioni e va dal tempo della Seconda guerra mondiale ai giorni nostri: ne sono coprotagonisti, nel 1944 Evelyn, giovane donna creola, la figlia di lei, Jackie, mamma al tempo di Reagan e il difficile nipote T.C. uomo dei giorni nostri. Ognuno di loro porta in sé gioie e dolori, commensurabili sia alle vicende personali sia allo status delle persone di colore che, soprattutto durante la Seconda guerra mondiale, venivano trattate in maniera subalterna e con inferiorità dai bianchi negli Stati Uniti.
Ogni generazione persegue lo stesso ideale: migliorare nel corso degli anni la propria vita, ma gli scivoloni e le ricadute cui i protagonisti sono soggetti li rendono molto umani e anche estremamente veri. Nonostante Evelyn, neppure maggiorenne alla fine del Secondo conflitto mondiale, si ritrovi già incinta e con il proprio giovane uomo lontano, le vicende paiono forse più lievi rispetto alle generazioni successive. Lei, incinta al primo incontro, lontana dal proprio fidanzatino, schiava della mentalità puritana del tempo e del “distacco di mondi” fra bianchi e persone di colore, trova nella famiglia, nella sorella e nei genitori, un conforto quasi insperato e inaspettato.
- Mi dispiace mamma. Avevi ragione tu. Mi dispiace -
- Sta zitta ragazza mia. C’è una preziosa vita, lì dentro. Una preziosa, preziosissima vita. E Dio ha deciso che eri degna di portarla dentro.
Cambiano i tempi e con essi si modificano mentalità e leggi, ma nel 1982, ecco la figlia di Evelyn, Jackie, madre single in difficoltà alle prese con l’assenza per tossicodipendenza del marito.
Jackie non condannava Terry per averla lasciata; più che altro aveva paura di ricevere una telefonata una mattina e scoprire che lo avevano arrestato durante una retata in un covo di spacciatori di crack, oppure in giro a rubare per pagarsi la dose.
In queste pagine si ha a che fare con quello che viene definito “razzismo sistemico” e come si legge nel Wall Street Journal:
Un tempo, il razzismo significava un’effettiva attuazione del pregiudizio: la quotidiana esecuzione della diseguaglianza di razza ovunque nella sfera pubblica e privata… Gli americani, oggi, sanno che il razzismo attivo non è più la maggiore barriera all’avanzamento dei neri e delle minoranze. Sin dagli anni Sessanta è stato soppiantato da altre patologie, anche se originariamente create dal razzismo.
Le vicende familiari che qui si susseguono hanno comunque un che di discriminante: l’autrice vuol porre l’attenzione non solo sulle difficoltà di dignitoso inserimento sociale per qualunque giovane nel mondo moderno, ma anche sul fatto che ciò sia particolarmente difficile, ancor oggi, nell’America che ha già avuto un presidente di colore, per le persone con la pelle scura. Al tempo dell’uragano Katrina, il nipote di Evelyn, T.C. ha ventotto anni e come il padre, ha problemi di droga, fino a venire incarcerato.
In La libertà possibile l’autrice si muove con abilità tra passato e presente, alternando eventi vicini nel tempo a flashback della Seconda guerra mondiale. La sua è una penna sapiente oltre che per la scorrevolezza della storia per il contenuto che essa ci porta. Margaret Wilkerson Sexton descrive in modo chiaro tre generazioni di una famiglia nera di New Orleans che cercano di fare le migliori scelte possibili in un mondo che ad ogni angolo mostra obblighi, divieti, pericoli e delusioni.
Il romanzo è il ripetuto tentativo di una sorta di riscatto e qua è là porta quei tratti distintivi della New Orleans che lo rendono ancor più vero e decisamente notevole.
