H. Rider Haggard fu uno dei precursori del romanzo d’avventura e noto per il romanzo Le miniere di re Salomone. La Newton Compton nei suoi Millelire pubblicò Bisanzio, il secondo volume della saga dell’eroe vichingo Olaf Spadarossa.
Dopo una serie di mirabolanti avventure in cui Olaf perde la donna che ama, l’eroe accetta di diventare guardia del corpo della bella e crudele imperatrice Irene, che si innamora di lui. Pensa addirittura di farlo regnare insieme a lei, ma Olaf ha altri piani.
Anche perché Olaf è a sua volta innamorato di una donna, Eliodora, dal passato misterioso. L’amore per Eliodora lo porterà a compiere gesti eroici o anche crudeli, mai a tradire il suo dovere di guardia imperiale.
D’altro canto in ogni sua difficoltà si può intravedere lo zampino di Irene, che in rotta con il figlio Costantino cerca un uomo forte in grado di proteggerla. Il finale è rocambolesco e non lo posso rivelare, ma sarà il preludio di altre avventure.
Bisanzio è un romanzo sicuramente superato per i tempi di oggi, tanto più che Haggard ha una convenzione assoluta sulla superiorità della razza bianca e una certa misoginia nella presentazione di Irene, donna intelligente e perciò immorale secondo un modo di pensare non ancora tramontato oggi. Detto questo, un libro di avventura per nulla impegnativo.
