“Il mondo visto da sotto. Narratori meridionali del ’900”, firmato da Walter Pedullà, professore emerito di letteratura italiana dell’Università La Sapienza di Roma, è una silloge di articoli scritti nel corso di diversi anni e pubblicati, ora, in un unico volume da Rubbettino.
Il libro propone prospettive inconsuete, viste ribaltate, nelle quali la questione meridionale è posta come elemento centrale, soprattutto nel saggio che precede la raccolta.
Il professor Pedullà è stato fondatore di riviste culturali ed è anche giornalista. Il suo sguardo alla letteratura è, quindi, anche uno sguardo alla politica, alla società, alle trasformazioni economico-sociali del ’900.
Il titolo dell’opera, “Il mondo visto da sotto”, citazione di Alberto Savinio, è proprio un modo per cogliere l’essenza della letteratura e della società tutta da una posizione che non è soltanto un punto nello spazio ma anche una posizione precisa nella scala sociale.
‘Da sotto’ rappresenta il punto di vista dalla Calabria, regione poverissima, dalla quale il professor Pedullà proviene. Sembrerebbe un’esagerazione pensare a una visione così ampia, addirittura al mondo visto da sotto, dal Sud, dalla Calabria, ma Pedullà si rifà a Corrado Alvaro, che si riteneva un calabrese d’Europa. Nel corso degli anni l’autore ha cambiato parere sul Sud e sulla letteratura, secondo lui oggi sembra messo peggio il primo e meglio la seconda, anche se è innegabile la differenza tra gli anni Quaranta e l’attualità, essendo arrivato il progresso anche al Sud e in Calabria.
E quando si parla di malaffare, di mafia, di ’ndrangheta, si parla di un fenomeno che, per quanto riguarda la corruzione, i soprusi, il mancato rispetto delle leggi, è un fenomeno a cui nessuna parte del mondo è estranea. La letteratura che rappresenta ciò è una parte della letteratura del mondo.
Da Pirandello in poi la letteratura diventa mondiale, non obbedisce più a leggi di causa ed effetto, entra in gioco l’assurdo, il "così è se vi pare", e finalmente anche la letteratura del Sud diventa sismografo dell’inconscio.
Walter Pedullà compie un’operazione critica connotata da un particolare strabismo, per cui guarda da una parte con un occhio e con l’altro, dall’altra. Parla di Pirandello, della letteratura e di una sorta di paradigma pirandelliano. Pirandello aveva capito che ci sono le culture che a un certo punto entrano in crisi e ciò avviene in due ambiti fondamentali: nella logica, il modo di pensare, e nella retorica, il modo di dire. Nei momenti di crisi prevale il difetto della logica, non riusciamo a pensare a come il mondo possa effettivamente svilupparsi e non abbiamo il linguaggio adatto. Anche per i calabresi c’è il duplice problema, nel difetto di logica e di retorica, su come pensare a se stessi e al mondo e su come rappresentarsi.
Attraverso tantissimi autori, tra cui D’Arrigo, La Cava, Pizzuto, Vittorini, Strati, Brancati, Walter Pedullà individua il periodo delle avanguardie, quello del neorealismo e del progresso economico, come il momento del crollo delle certezze mentre il Sud diventa una sorta di lente d’ingrandimento con cui affrontare temi attuali e non circoscritti, come l’emigrazione, la miseria, il ritorno alle origini. È così che si superano i confini geografici e il mondo tutto ha un nuovo punto di vista a cui dare centralità.
