La Sicilia è stata sempre un tema di riflessione nella lunga tradizione letteraria italiana, considerata una terra “inventata”, immaginata, frutto di un’autorappresentazione dei suoi stessi intellettuali. Altre volte si è affermato un giudizio esterno con stereotipi ricorrenti quali la mafia, la violenza, la sottocultura. Un “invenzione” da intendere tanto nel senso di creazione letteraria quanto in quello di inventio: rinvenimento, scoperta, conoscenza. Vi sono Capuana, Verga, Vittorini, Sciascia accanto ad autori “stranieri” che radicalizzano una cultura con immagini che non trovano fondamento nella reale dimensione storica. Occorre superare il mito dell’eccezionalità, in favore di un recupero della relazionalità tra dimensione locale e regionale.
“L’invenzione della Sicilia. Letteratura, mafia, modernità” di Matteo Di Gesù è dedicato al tentativo di decostruire queste interpretazioni spesso fuorvianti. Sebbene Leonardo Sciascia sia citato solamente nei capitoli finali, il libro appare chiaramente ispirato da questo grande scrittore: uno storico, uno studioso e un intellettuale pubblico che ben dimostra quanto possa essere falso il mito dell’intellettuale separato dalla realtà.
Sono presenti due costanti nel libro di Matteo Di Gesù, lo scardinamento del concetto di essenzialismo siciliano e il richiamo ad un razionalismo illuministico come quello di Francesco Paolo Di Blasi, ricordato proprio da Sciascia ne “Il consiglio d’Egitto”. La Sicilia anche come sede e scaturiggine di un’Altra letteratura, connotata da fenomeni quali la mafia, intesa come manifestazione del senso dell’onore e della giustizia; peraltro anche passaggi dello stesso “Gattopardo”, spiegano il carattere dei siciliani ricorrendo al fattore climatico: nel troppo caldo è individuato la causa che ha determinato una sorte di atarassia, di rassegnazione, un atteggiamento tendente al fatalismo.
Esiste, poi, una letteratura politica e militante, e altra, come quella di Verga e Capuana: il loro approccio letterario a problematiche di carattere sociale e politico è meno evidente ed esprimono bene una forma di “rassegnazione” dell’animo siciliano.
Leonardo Sciascia nel suo famoso e famigerato articolo sui professionisti dell’antimafia frantumò questi schemi mentali, raccogliendo opposte reazioni e giudizi. Quelle di Sciascia erano sottigliezze letterarie erudite che trascendono il significato letterale ma il concetto di giustizialismo ne risultò intorbidito. Si cita l’articolo di Sciascia dimenticando che, in realtà, esprimeva una serie di preoccupazioni che si pongono in una linea lunga del suo pensiero. Era una critica al garantismo e alle misure eccezionali di lotta alla mafia contro la quale gli strumenti di uno stato democratico avrebbero dovuto essere sufficienti.
