Una solitudine troppo rumorosa

“Sotto le mie mani e nella mia pressa meccanica periscono libri preziosi e io non posso impedire questo corso. Così, unico al mondo, io so in quale pacco giacciono come in una tomba Goethe e Schiller e dove Hoderlin e dove Nietzsche...”
Hanta, il protagonista, da trentacinque anni pressa carta vecchia e libri, un macero che ritiene un crimine contro l’umanità. Per trovare le forze beve birra, tanta, e spesso salva qualche bel libro:
“da loro apprenderò su me stesso qualche cosa che ancora non so”.
Si ritiene istruito contro la sua volontà: il suo lavoro così singolare gli ha concesso la possibilità di conoscere ed imparare i pensieri di Hegel, Nietzsche, Kant, così che in realtà non sa quali pensieri siano i suoi e quali abbia letto. Ogni sera porta nella sua casa, un piccolo scantinato all’interno di un palazzo, i libri sottratti alla distruzione, che occupano ogni spazio: cucina, dispensa, camera da letto. Persino nel gabinetto gli incombono sulla testa quintali di libri. E’ attento nel muoversi nei piccoli spazi rimasti liberi, basterebbe un gesto imprudente o un sussulto per ascoltare con terrore i suoi libri preziosi slittare. Una vita che trascorre nel silenzio delle sue meditazioni in una solitudine troppo rumorosa: cammina per le vie, oltrepassa i tram e le auto e i suoi pensieri vanno ai libri che ha salvato o al suo lavoro disumano perché non è sufficientemente produttivo come gli richiede il capofabbrica. Ormai, un mondo vecchio è finito e il mondo nuovo percepisce i libri come semplice carta straccia.
“Mentre ritornavo al mio sotterraneo per le vie di Praga, camminano e pensavo alla malinconia dell’eterna costruzione del mondo e intanto con le lacrime agli occhi guardavo in alto per vedere ad un tratto ciò che non avevo mai notato, che sulle facciate e sulle fronti dei palazzi io vedevo la cosa nella quale si proiettavano e che bramavano Hegel e Goethe, quella Grecia in noi, quella bella ellenicità come modello e scopo, vedevo un ordine di colonne doriche, i triglifi, vedevo le cornici a corona e gli ordini di colonne ioniche , un ordine di colonne corinzie con l’ondulatura a foglie e intanto osservavo che quella stessa Grecia è anche a Praga, non solo sulle facciate dei palazzi praghesi ma anche nelle teste degli abitanti, soltanto perché i ginnasi classici e le università umanistiche hanno imbrattato di Grecia e di Roma milioni di teste ceche.“
In questo piccolo libro, poetico e amaro, straordinariamente attuale, la letteratura è sempre presente con una narrazione ricca di simboli. Il protagonista si astrae dalla realtà, riflette e discorre delle gioie della cultura con Kant, Nietzsche, Schiller, Goethe e tanti altri. Ma vi è anche un senso di smarrimento per il disfacimento culturale del tempo, la cultura è ritenuta superata perché non necessaria, non porta profitti. Il benessere della società deve basarsi su ordinamenti economici i cui principi delineano la grandezza di un paese dallo sviluppo delle sole tecnologie industriali. L’incapacità di sostenere una situazione esistenziale in cui si sente annullato e derubato porterà Hanta alla scelta di una estrema soluzione.
Bohumil Hrabal ha vissuto sempre a Praga fino alla sua morte. Nel 1939 non potendo proseguire i suoi studi di legge a seguito dell’occupazione nazista, per vivere cambiò tanti mestieri, da operaio metalmeccanico, a imballatore di carta da macero ottenuta dai libri censurati dal regime comunista e in seguito anche cameriere. Dal 1963 poté dedicarsi alla scrittura. La fine della Primavera di Praga, nel 1968, portò alla censura delle sue opere da parte del regime. I suoi romanzi, circolando clandestinamente, lo hanno reso un maestro, riconosciuto come una delle voci più alte della letteratura europea di questo secolo.
