Storia della nostra scomparsa (Fazi, 2020 traduzione di Stefano Tummolini) è il nuovo romanzo di Jing-Jing Lee scrittrice nata a Singapore, luogo in cui è ambientato il suo splendido ma altrettanto crudo romanzo. La narrazione segue una doppia linea temporale: quella dal 1942 fino alla fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale e quella odierna, più precisamente pochi anni dopo il Duemila.
Nel 1942 Wang Di è una bella sedicenne che vive con la sua povera, ma serena famiglia nelle campagne di Singapore: a loro basta poco per andare avanti, si accontentano dei prodotti dell’orto e del pollaio e dell’esiguo salario del padre. C’è la guerra, tutti vivono in maggiori ristrettezze, ma la vita della giovane protagonista subisce un brusco cambiamento quando il suo piccolo villaggio è preda della furia dei soldati che colpiscono gli abitanti, depredano le case, gettano Wang Di e altre ragazze del villaggio su un camion. La giovane è terrorizzata, ma inizialmente si nutre della speranza di poter sopportare la prigionia e poi tornare a casa. Nulla è però più lontano dalla verità.
La seconda linea temporale ha luogo nel ventunesimo secolo. Kevin è un adolescente con tanti problemi: ipovedente, di famiglia non benestante, per la sua “mediocrità” è vittima di bullismo da parte di alcuni compagni di scuola. Di animo buono e di carattere un po’ troppo mite, Kevin è molto affezionato alla nonna che, improvvisamente, è colta da ictus e, prima di morire, gli confessa qualcosa. È un segreto che non riguarda lui, è una storia più lontana nel tempo, ma Kevin è spinto a far chiarezza.
In qualche modo, le due vicende, apparentemente legate solo dal luogo in cui avvengono, Singapore, andranno a incontrarsi. Il percorso è molto tortuoso perché è il cammino di una, di tante vite in particolare di quella di Wang Di cui il destino non risparmia tante sofferenze. Prigioniera dei giapponesi, la protagonista si ritrova a subire fisicamente le brutture più efferate. Condotta in un luogo lontano, come tante altre ragazze, è obbligata a essere una “donna di conforto”, pronta a soddisfare ogni giorno i desideri di decine e decine di uomini lontani dalle proprie mogli. La "casa in bianco e nero" in cui le ragazze sono costrette alla prostituzione diviene un punto focale della storia di Wang Di e di tante altre giovani. Qualcuna non uscirà più da quel luogo, qualcuna sopravviverà, ma sarà altrettanto atroce ritornare nel mondo, tra gente che mormora, occhi che giudicano e, soprattutto, con ricordi, anzi incubi, incancellabili. La storia di Wang Di è ancor più singolare perché è la netta dimostrazione che anche dal fango sbocciano i fiori e alcuni eventi, anche se di troppo breve durata, segnano e nutrono l’animo. Non si tratta di innamoramenti bensì della capacità insita in ogni donna di dar vita a quanto di più prezioso anche in terreno aspro e in condizioni inumane. Wang Di esce viva da quell’inferno, ma la sua vita sarà per sempre segnata da una gioventù vissuta tra le brutture e le nefandezze più efferate. Quel che sicuramente spicca agli occhi dei lettori è la delicatezza dei personaggi: al di là di coloro che commettono gli atti più brutali, c’è gente buona, forse più mite perché un atteggiamento remissivo nei confronti del destino è tipico dei popoli orientali.
L’avvicendarsi dei fatti sarà come lo sciogliersi di un’intricata matassa di ricordi e di segreti: per Kevin si tratta di una scoperta che lo renderà più maturo, consapevole e, forse, cambierà anche qualcosa nella sua situazione familiare, per Wang Di, finalmente, l’occasione per svelare tutti i dolori, i dispiaceri che con estrema compostezza aveva tenuto dentro di sé per una vita.
Storia della nostra scomparsa è un romanzo straordinariamente coinvolgente: Jing-Jing Lee sa passare dalle più terribili nefandezze alle speranze incancellabili, alla solidarietà, al “conforto” che non è l’atteggiamento richiesto alle donne nei confronti dei soldati, bensì è la condivisione, il rispetto del dolore e l’aiuto nei momenti disperati. Il finale pare mettere molte cose al giusto posto anche se nel Duemila potrebbe essere troppo tardi. Una vita di amarezze non si cancella ma la speranza di un po’ di serenità riconcilia i protagonisti con i loro vissuti.
Jing-Jing Lee ci regala, attraverso le pagine del suo romanzo, immagini di atrocità, ma anche di inaspettata speranza: non a tutto c’è rimedio, ma a volte la continua lotta fra Male e Bene volge a favore di quest’ultimo, a costo però di estenuanti attese e di tanto dolore. Potremmo paragonare questo romanzo ad uno fra i simboli della tradizione orientale: il fiore di loto che, meraviglioso, nasce e cresce nelle condizioni più estreme e rappresenta la bellezza dell’anima e la perseveranza.
Storia della nostra scomparsa è una vicenda per un pubblico adulto, ma è particolarmente adatta a chi sa cosa sia la sofferenza e quanto siano aspri certi periodi della vita. È una storia di forza, di straordinaria resilienza, una vicenda indimenticabile.
