L’Africa è una terra immensamente ricca di diversità culturali e storiche, che sfuggono a ogni banalizzazione, e per provare ad avvicinarsi alla conoscenza delle sue culture serve un buon punto di partenza. La Storia dell’Africa di John Fage (1921-2002), pubblicata nella sua quarta edizione italiana da Odoya nel 2020 (con la traduzione di Giuseppe Morosini), assolve ottimamente questa funzione, offrendo un riassunto apprezzabile sotto molti punti di vista. Invero, davanti alla mole dell’opera, parlare di "sintesi" può sembrare fuori luogo (è uno scritto di 613 pagine!), ma la materia è sconfinata e all’accademico va riconosciuto il merito di essere riuscito a condensarla in un unico volume.
Premesso ciò, è difficile persino recensire un simile colosso per l’ampiezza, la varietà di genti citate e di temi trattati; deve essere stato arduo calcolare un bilanciamento adatto per una (pur vasta) esposizione generale. Civiltà, migrazioni, guerre, regni, colonizzazioni e schiavismo sono delineati in un grande e armonioso affresco, concepito con un’attenzione particolare per la comprensibilità: il libro può essere affrontato da chiunque, l’unico ostacolo per qualcuno può essere trovare il tempo per finirlo, ma si lascia leggere con piacere.
Si deve osservare che l’indice potrebbe far sperare un maggiore approfondimento sulle religioni, che però non è pienamente sviluppato: si sarebbe potuto dedicare più spazio ai culti animisti, l’islam avrebbe meritato alcune parole in più e, in proporzione, sono troppo scarse le notizie sulle storie dei cristiani. Si può poi evidenziare il fatto che Fage scrive che “Alessandria continuò a essere uno dei centri più importanti [...] e fu proprio qui che una setta giudaica deviante si trasformò nella Chiesa cristiana”, ma Franco Cardini, storico più versato in tale argomento, ha ricordato in molte sedi come i cristiani non siano mai stati “una setta del giudaismo”, sin dagli atti degli apostoli, infatti, i seguaci di Cristo tendono a differenziarsi dagli israeliti: erano ebrei, ma (semplificando) ruppero la tradizione ebraica infrangendo una serie di regole. Anche nel Vangelo di Giovanni si legge: “I Giudei avevano già stabilito che, se uno lo avesse riconosciuto come il Cristo, venisse espulso dalla sinagoga” (9, 22) e “I sommi sacerdoti allora deliberarono di uccidere anche Lazzaro, perché molti Giudei se ne andavano a causa di lui e credevano in Gesù” (12, 10-11), testimonianza di come già al tempo della predicazione di Gesù i suoi fedeli furono allontanati dalle sinagoghe e vissero come una comunità separata.
Dopo aver riconosciuto queste mancanze, tuttavia, non si può trascurare l’innegabile valore del testo di Fage; il suo sottotitolo recita: “Sulle tracce di una leggenda” e si richiama al lavoro svolto anche sui racconti orali africani, ma gli studi su tutte le fonti, l’impianto documentario e le analisi proposte sono davvero il frutto di un impegno colossale.
Oggi in Italia esistono innumerevoli comunità di africani e ogni italiano colto dovrebbe sentire il dovere di informarsi sulle culture di questi popoli, l’acquisto di Storia dell’Africa è un’occasione da non perdere: è difficile memorizzare una simile quantità di nozioni, ma averle tutte riunite in un solo tomo è sicuramente molto comodo.
