“Non si può fare una rivoluzione portando i guanti di seta”, giurava Josif Stalin. E ci credeva, al punto da consolidare gli esiti di quella bolscevica stanando gli avversari politici durante l’epoca così detta del “grande terrore”. E questo prima di sconfiggere il nazismo e diventare leader di levatura mondiale. Qualcuno lo equipara ai nefandi Hitler e Mussolini, lo slavista Guido Carpi, intervistato da Pilade Cantini per il volumetto che gli dedicano Stalin. Il minotauro e la cipolla ( Edizioni Clichy, 2019), muove, non senza ragione, qualche distinguo.
Noi che cerchiamo di valorizzare gli aspetti positivi dell’esperienza storica chiamata Unione Sovietica non possiamo sottrarci a un paragone che ci viene costantemente rinfacciato: il paragone col nazismo e coi campi di sterminio (…) Ma fra l’olocausto e il Grande terrore c’è una differenza fondamentale: l’Olocausto ha l’obiettivo assurdo, folle della purezza razziale, ma lo persegue con metodi estremamente razionali ed efficienti; il Grande terrore ha obiettivi che, a modo loro, hanno una qualche forma di razionalità, ossia chiudere l’onda lunga della Guerra civile eliminando le potenziali ‘quinte colonne’ all’interno del Paese. Tutte quelle categorie di persone che hanno subito l’esperienza sovietica in uno dei suoi momenti, che le si sono contrapposti (…)
Ritengo sia detto non per giustificare, ma per puntualizzare, restituire cioè lo statuto di Stalin a una luce più autentica. Controversa. Sfaccettata. Dicotomica come lascerebbe pensare lo stesso sottotitolo di questo saggio. Parafraso:minotauro o cipolla? Di certo Stalin non fu un intellettuale. Per lui la materia veniva prima delle grandi idee. E certo non fu un angelo. Ma se demone è stato lo è stato per la causa socialista, non certo per assecondare psicopatologie di estrazione ariana. In virtù di queste caratteristiche Iosif Stalin è stato capace di parlare alla pancia fibrillante della Nazione, di individuare collanti che le masse potessero accettare e riconoscere come “codici che facevano presa sul loro retroterra mitologico, magico e religioso, naturalmente rivisitato e adattato”.
Dopo un’articolata biografia storico-politica curata dalla slavista Virginia Pili, la conversazione tra Carpi e Cantini – il professore e il cantastorie - occupa il corpo centrale del testo, divagando con pertinenza attorno al quesito fondamentale: chi è stato davvero Josif Stalin e su cosa poggia la sua aura, nel bene e nel male, leggendaria? In altre parole: perché a trent’anni dalla fine dell’esperienza sovietica, si continua a dibattere su di lui, taluni non senza qualche nostalgia? L’ultima sezione del libro è riservata a foto e frasi storiche, sue e sul suo conto. Restituiscono l’uomo e lo statista. E la considerazione di cui godeva, anche fuori dai vasti confini dell’Unione Sovietica. Questa, per esempio, è di Winston Churchill, e fu pronunciata nel 1946:
Ho grande ammirazione e rispetto per il valoroso popolo russo e per il mio compagno dei tempi di guerra, il maresciallo Stalin.
Sarà perché le ragioni di Stato esulano quasi sempre dalle ragioni del cuore, ma, tirando le somme, il fantasma di Stalin è lungi dall’essere stato esorcizzato, bisogna ancora e comunque farci i conti.
