Quando si parla della battaglia della Somme, nel bacino del fiume omonimo che si getta nella Manica (nordest della Francia, Piccardia, capoluogo Amiens), si pensa soprattutto alla prima giornata di quella pagina di sangue, specie per la storia inglese. Il 1 luglio 1916, le truppe britanniche persero 60mila uomini nelle prime ore del combattimento, che si protrasse fino al 18 novembre, con altri dodici attacchi in grande stile alle posizioni tedesche. Secondo le stime, i caduti dell’Intesa furono complessivamente 615.000 (200.000 francesi) e 450.000 i tedeschi, che pure occupavano trincee ben allestite, protette da solidi reticolati e che si impegnarono solo in una difesa attiva (controffensiva). Sul fronte occidentale, il logoramento andò sempre oltre ogni tentativo di contenerlo, da parte dei comandi dei due schieramenti.
Prima di vedere gli anglofrancesi all’assalto, i fanti germanici avevano subìto un bombardamento d’artiglieria interminabile. Il grosso attendeva col cuore in gola nei rifugi sotterranei, che ressero alla prova, ma le vedette di turno venivano inesorabilmente massacrate, costrette com’erano ad uscire all’esterno per avvistare in tempo il nemico all’attacco.
Un’intera settimana di fuoco martellante sui dieci chilometri di fronte, una vera grandine di granate pesanti sulle linee tedesche. Quando mossero, a passo lento, nella terra di nessuno sconvolta, i tommies erano convinti di non trovare che pochi sopravvissuti intontiti. Così li avevano rassicurati gli alti comandi, ben al sicuro lontano dal fronte. Ma nonostante le vagonate di proietti e le grandi mine fatte brillare, i reticolati erano rimasti in gran parte ugualmente aggrovigliati e i tedeschi sciamarono dagli stollen a rioccupare le trincee, con le mitragliatrici intatte e l’arsenale difensivo in efficienza.
Per gli attaccanti la sorpresa fu drammatica e da una “passeggiata” verso il nemico il 1 luglio si trasformò in un giorno d’inferno, un’autentica apocalisse.
Joshua Levine con “Somme. Voci dall’inferno” (Giunti, maggio 2016, pp. 376, euro 22,00), secondo la personale vocazione documentaristica a costruire grandi “diorami” bellici basati sul punto di vista dei protagonisti, ha voluto far raccontare dalle voci di quei soldati quell’esperienza spaventosa,
“che può essere narrata solo dagli uomini che la vissero sulla propria pelle”.
Come spiega nella premessa:
“questo è un libro sugli individui e sulle esperienze individuali. La battaglia della Somme ne scaraventò a centinaia di migliaia in un mondo al di là della morale e nel libro registro le loro reazioni. Allo stesso tempo, gli uomini della Somme meritano di essere considerati come gli unici testimoni di un’esperienza che per noi, abituati alla moderna società dei diritti, è arduo perfino immaginare”.
Il volume è dunque una lunga, esauriente, coinvolgente sequenza di testimonianze. Il nome e cognome, con l’indicazione del grado e del reparto, precedono dichiarazioni più o meno brevi, alcune istantanee. Un collage drammatico, estremamente efficace, più di lunghi testi e saggi.
Chi ha vinto la battaglia della Somme? Non gli alleati – anche se i francesi ottennero il risultato voluto di allentare la pressione nemica su Verdun – ma nemmeno i tedeschi, per le enormi perdite che avevano pagato, pur restando sulla difensiva. Un cruento pareggio: la linee del kaiser arretrarono solo di qualche chilometro. Da ambo le parti un enorme dispendio di munizioni, guadagni territoriali degli attaccanti trascurabili e molto inferiori di certo alle aspettative: la battaglia della Somme, da luglio a metà novembre del 1916, fa solo inorridire.
Una dolorosissima X sulla schedina della Grande Guerra, ma in questo settore del fronte occidentale di appena una decina di chilometri, per ognuno dei 142 giorni perirono 3000 soldati britannici.
Joshua Levine conclude ribadendo che il numero delle perdite della Somme è impressionante. Cifre difficili da accettare. Malgrado tutto, però, gli sforzi francobritannici riuscirono a indebolire profondamente l’esercito tedesco, da ogni punto di vista, fisico, psicologico, numerico, strategico. Se non si fosse combattuto sulla Somme, Verdun sarebbe caduta e la guerra avrebbe potuto prendere una piega diversa.
I comandi inglesi commisero molti errori, ma questo vuol dire che fu sbagliato combatterla e insistere, nonostante il terribile costo umano di quegli assalti? Lo Stato Maggiore britannico giocò con le vite dei suoi soldati con cinica indifferenza, ma qualunque strategia, anche la più spietata, non diventava lecita di fronte a un nemico apparentemente inarrestabile? Queste domande, valide per molti conflitti, sono state sollevate e continueranno ad esserlo,
“non importa se in buona o cattiva fede. Le risposte dovrebbero interessarci, anche se ci divideranno sempre”
.
