“L’oro, arancio e cremisi delle foglie si staglia sull’azzurro limpido del cielo e il sole brilla, creando una falsa aspettativa di tepore”.
Nell’ottobre del 1931 nel New Hampshire una nuova, lussuosissima Ford V-8 sfrecciava verso lo stadio di Darthmouth, dove si stava svolgendo una partita di football. A bordo dell’automobile Budgie Byrne e Lily Dane chiacchieravano fra loro. Le ragazze, entrambe studentesse presso lo Smith College e amiche fin dalla nascita, erano completamente diverse l’una dall’altra sia per aspetto sia per personalità: Budgie era estroversa quanto Lily riservata. “Un brivido mi attraversa la schiena come una scarica elettrica”. All’interno dello stadio Lily aveva avuto occhi solo per il quarterback Nick Greenwald dallo “sguardo da corsaro” e dalla “volontà di ferro”, perché
“c’era qualcosa di intenso e folgorante nella sua espressione quasi che venisse da un’altra epoca”.
Nick e Lily si erano subito innamorati, ma per la famiglia della giovane il fatto che il ragazzo fosse di origine ebraica rappresentava un serio motivo di ostacolo per la loro unione. A causa di una serie di malintesi un grande amore era destinato a terminare bruscamente ma per Lily dimenticare Nick era impossibile e uguale era Nick per la sua “Lilybird”.
“Greenwald, tra un’ora questa ragazza se ne andrà per la sua strada. Devi trovare il modo di rintracciarla”.
Seaview, Rhode Island, Massachusetts. Nel maggio del 1938 l’estate stava per tornare in questa esclusiva località di villeggiatura frequentata dai newyorkesi dell’Upper East Side di New York come le famiglie di Budgie e Lily. In questa lingua di terra che s’incurvava dalla costa del Rhode Island come un dito affusolato, “protetta all’estremità da un promontorio roccioso e da un fortino di pietra che aveva sparato il suo ultimo colpo di cannone durante la guerra civile”, Lily si sentiva al sicuro. Per la ventottenne, la cui famiglia era stata una delle prime a costruire un’abitazione di fronte all’Oceano Atlantico, Seaview Neck significava atmosfera antiquata e riti immemorabili celebrati al Seaview Beach Club sulle note di Embraceable you. Ora nella casa accanto a quella di Lily stavano per arrivare Nick e Budgie Greenwald, di ritorno dalla luna di miele.
“Non credevo al destino, non davo nessuna importanza ai presentimenti o al sesto senso”.
Dopo sette anni Lily era costretta ad affrontare quella che una volta era la sua cara amica e il suo ex innamorato, al pari di un uragano, simile a quello che stava per colpire Seaview, una tempesta di sentimenti contrastanti albergavano nel cuore di una donna sempre innamorata dell’unico uomo che le avesse mai fatto battere il cuore.
“La sua voce era proprio come me la ricordavo, forse appena più profonda, più dolce. Mi allontanai dai gradini e mi accovacciai sulla sabbia al riparo della veranda, tremando d’emozione per quel suono tanto familiare”.
Scritto nel vento (titolo originale: A Hundred Summers, Nord, 2014, traduzione di Elena Cantoni), secondo romanzo dell’autrice americana Beatriz Williams, animata da sempre da una vera e propria passione per la narrativa, è dedicato
“alle vittime e ai superstiti del grande uragano del New England del 1938”.
Il suo primo lavoro Le parole del nostro destino è stato un bestseller tradotto in tutto il mondo. Attraverso due piani temporali la protagonista rievoca due momenti fondamentali della sua esistenza trasmettendo al lettore la sua sensibilità e la sua determinazione.
“Nick prova lo stesso senso di sacralità, la stessa, sbalorditiva certezza che provo io?”.
Nella nota finale del volume l’autrice, che vive con il marito e con i figli da molti anni nel Connecticut, precisa che
“il grande uragano del 1938 si abbatté senza preavviso sul New England nel pomeriggio del 21 settembre, causando oltre settecento vittime e sradicando più di due miliardi di alberi. Per decenni, fu quella legna ad alimentare i caminetti delle case e il Moosilauke Ravine Lodge, sulle montagne del New Hampshire settentrionale, fu in parte costruito coi giganteschi tronchi della foresta primaria divelta dalla violenza dei venti”.
Infine bellissima quanto struggente la poesia di Matthew Arnold Sulle spiagge di Dover (1867) posta come esergo al romanzo:
“Ah, amore mio, restiamo fedeli l’uno all’altra! Perché il mondo, che pare stendersi dinanzi a noi come una terra di sogni, così vario, così splendido, così nuovo, non possiede in realtà, né gioia, né amore, né luce, né certezza, né pace, né sollievo nel dolore; E siamo qui, come in una piana che s’oscura sbattuti tra confusi e allarmi di lotte e fughe, dove eserciti ignoranti si scontrano di notte”.
