Polygamy, romanzo di Gaye Shortland, autrice anche di Turtles All the Way down, si legge tutto d’un fiato, perchè la storia è insolita e avvincente.
Kate, un’irlandese che insegna inglese in Nigeria, si innamora di un nativo già sposato da cui ha una bambina e che l’abbandona per far visita alla moglie, dopo averle promesso di tornare. Durante la vana attesa, Kate avvia una relazione assai coinvolgente con un altro musulmano perseguitato e costretto a nascondersi, anche lui sposato e con figli. Il loro rapporto, fortemente basato su una magnetica attrazione sessuale, è comunque fondato su intensi sentimenti da parte di entrambi.
L’intreccio di relazioni e lo scontro fra culture monogame e poligame rendono la trama assai appassionante.
Per un lettore europeo, alcuni passi sono un po’ scioccanti (mi riferisco alle descrizioni in cui emerge il diverso rapporto degli africani con la sfera sessuale) e anche la protagonista è sconcertata dalla gestualità di quei nativi.
L’Islam è percepito come una religione professata in questa zona dell’Africa in maniera non ossessiva, essendo il sesso una delle fondamenta della quotidianità, vissuto in maniera assai naturale: quando chiama gli si risponde e ci si abbandona ad esso senza esitazioni. Molte le descrizioni su tale tema e sulla gelosia, invidia e persino odio, della protagonista nei confronti della leggittima moglie di Khassim e la sua determinazione a farlo suo, al punto da essere addiritura disposta ad accettare un matrimonio poligamo.
Delicata, bella e disperata la figura di Jonathan, l’amico europeo gay che soffre perché Musa, il suo compagno nigeriano, decide di sposarsi. Attraverso la storia che lo riguarda si accenna alla convivenza di omo ed eterosessualità e all’idea dei musulmani che l’omossessualità è criticabile solo se si svolge un ruolo passivo, altrimenti è considerata perfettamente normale.
