Jack Foley è un famoso rapinatore di banche che sta scontando una pena di trent’anni nel carcere di Glades, California. Jack sta cercando di evadere dal carcere attraverso un tunnel. Ad attenderlo c’è Buddy, il suo complice.
Buddy però non è solo. Ad attendere Jack c’è infatti anche una giovane e bellissima donna con la pistola puntata contro di lui. Si tratta dello sceriffo federale Karen Sisco che però, per qualche strano motivo, esita davanti al volto di Jack. Karen viene disarmata, immobilizzata e gettata nel bagagliaio della macchina di Buddy, lo stesso bagagliaio in cui entra anche Jack nella speranza che nessuno lo noti.
Nel ristretto spazio che sono costretti a condividere Jack e Karen scoprono di provare un’attrazione reciproca davvero intensa e profonda. Karen riesce a scappare ma i due amanti riusciranno ad incontrarsi più e più volte lasciando da parte i ruoli che ricoprono nella vita ed essendo finalmente soltanto se stessi. Ecco allora che fughe, rapine e inseguimenti si intrecciano con i loro incontri d’amore, di passione e di sesso creando un romanzo pieno di suspense e d’avventura ma anche di passioni travolgenti.
Ma fino a quando Jack e Karen riusciranno ad amarsi senza ricordarsi i ruoli che ricoprono nella loro vita e le implicazioni che comportano?
"Out of sight" è un romanzo capace di farci scoprire quanto sia labile il confine che separa la razionalità dal sentimento, l’amore più profondo dal proprio dovere. Questo è un romanzo che vive continuamente in bilico tra la letteratura gialla e la commedia d’amore senza cadere mai nell’uno o nell’altro genere.
Da quest’opera è stato tratto nel 1998 il film omonimo diretto da Steven Soderbergh e interpretato da George Clooney nei panni di Jack Foley e Jennifer Lopez nei panni di Karen Sisco. Sia il film che il romanzo hanno riscosso davvero un grande successo.
