“Naturalmente avrebbe potuto trattarsi di un’altra città, se le circostanze fossero state diverse, il periodo diverso, e se anch’io fossi stata diversa; avrebbe potuto essere Parigi o Chicago o persino San Francisco, ma dal momento che sto parlando di me, è di New York che vi parlo.”
Scrive così Joan Didion nel 1957 in uno dei suoi scritti più celebri e più belli, una vera e propria dichiarazione d’amore per New York, Bei tempi addio, contenuto nella raccolta Verso Betlemme.
Quasi dodici anni dopo, una donna di nome Elizabeth Hardwick, intellettuale e fondatrice della "New York Review of Books", pubblica un libro molto personale e indefinibile. Si chiama Sleepless Night, parla di New York e delle persone che la abitano osservate da una residenza per ragazze. Il suo guardarsi e rapportarsi con la città in cui vive ricorda l’io scritto da Didion in tanti libri e in tanti modi: nei romanzi, facendo parlare in prima persona le protagoniste; nei "pezzi giornalistici" che raccontano i giorni sereni a Malibu o le banalità del nuovo femminismo; nei racconti autobiografici in Da dove vengo.
Non sorprende, quindi, che a firmare la prefazione di Notti insonni di Elizabeth Hardwick (Blackie, 2021) sia proprio una scrittrice come Didion. Anzi ci sembra giusto così.
Pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1979, quando ancora il dibattito sull’ontologia dell’autofiction e del memoir non era così acceso e pervasivo, e ora tradotto da Claudia Durastanti, Notti insonni sfugge a una chiara e rigida collocazione di genere letterario. Un romanzo? Un memoir? Un diario? Forse qualcosa che assomiglia molto a tutti e tre. Una meditazione su una vita, come afferma sicura Didion nella prefazione. Un’opera nottambula, azzarderei io, un insieme di pensieri e ricordi che sulla carta hanno il veloce e confusionario procedere tipico delle visioni notturne, quando con gli occhi sbarrati e senza sonno guardiamo il soffitto e assistiamo all’andirivieni delle immagini del nostro passato: le persone che abbiamo amato e conosciuto, le nostre delusioni, gli amici con i quali abbiamo convissuto, gli artisti incontrati nel momento in cui stavano diventando qualcuno.
Suddiviso in dieci parti, Notti insonni è un insieme di istantanee di una vita ricca di stimoli intellettuali e di incontri più o meno fortunati. Scapoli affascinanti e mariti pieni di debiti che cenano con le loro mogli in ristoranti che non possono permettersi, la musica di Billie Holiday nei night club, divorzi e separazioni di amici e conoscenti, le feste in cui tutti si sentono intelligenti e interessanti e chissà se lo sono per davvero, i tormenti e i colpi di fulmine delle donne facili e felici. E, ancora prima, prima di New York, delle sue luci e dei suoi palazzi, l’infanzia nel Kentucky, i "sonni tranquilli" nella campagna, e poi Boston, il Maine, Amsterdam e l’Europa, Montreal.
Dall’albergo per sole donne di Manhattan in cui risiede, Elizabeth Hardwick osserva il Novecento americano nel suo farsi secolo di miseria e di razzismo, ma anche di sogni e libertà. Lo racconta con generosità e dettagli, ma mai conferendo alle immagini una forma o una struttura narrativa. Ciò che leggiamo è esattamente quello che l’autrice tira fuori dal suo passato, nella sua coerenza caotica di ricordo e fantasma.
C’è come un senso di lontananza in quello che Hardwick scrive, come se pur avendo vissuto tutto in prima persona non fosse mai affondata per intero nel cuore delle cose, e come se fosse proprio quella parte di sé, la parte non sommersa, rimasta vigile e in disparte, a spingerla a dedicarsi a un “lavoro di memoria trasformata e persino distorta”:
“Se solo una persona sapesse cosa ricordare o fingere di ricordare. Prendi una decisione, e tutto ciò che vuoi dalle cose perdute si manifesterà”.
L’aderenza del racconto alla realtà è solo una parte della nostra storia, così come l’insonnia è solo uno dei tanti modi di esperire la notte.
