Letzer berg, l’ultimo monte: è così che gli austriaci chiamavano nel 1916 il massiccio vicentino del Novegno, sopra Schio. L’estremo baluardo per i nostri comandi, l’ultima linea per fanti, artiglieri e alpini che difesero strenuamente le residue asperità dov’era ancora possibile fermare l’offensiva nemica ed evitare che gli austroungheresi dilagassero nella pianura veneta, alle spalle delle armate italiane schierate sul Carso e Isonzo. Il sacrificio dei soldati in grigioverde arrestò gli avversari in vista dell’obiettivo, che per loro rimase irraggiungibile. Si legge nel volume dello scomparso Pino Marchi, “Non toccarono il verde piano. Cronache della battaglia di monte Novegno maggio-giugno 1916”, pubblicato in una nuova edizione, nel maggio 2017 (pp. 140, euro 20,00), dalla casa editrice il Prato, di Saonara (Padova).
Inaugura la collana Vita di guerra, diretta da Bepi Magrin ed era finora un libro introvabile, dato alle stampe nel 1975 a circolazione limitata e riproposto da un altro editore nel 2010, per i testi dell’insegnante, giornalista, ricercatore di storia locale e vicende belliche nell’Alto Vicentino. Di origini triestine, Pino Marchi (1938-2002) risiedeva a Schio dagli anni ’60, dove si è distinto nell’attività dell’Associazione 4 Novembre, negli ultimi decenni del Novecento.
Il Monte Novegno, nelle Prealpi vicentine, si protende ad arco verso la pianura veneta, con una serie di cime. La più elevata raggiunge i 1552 metri. Su alcuni di questi rilievi, dal Monte Giove al Passo Campedello, ci si batté corpo a corpo il 12 e 13 giugno 1916, quando il comando imperiale scatenò l’offensiva finale per sboccare nel piano.
Nel saggio, Pino Marchi entra nel dettaglio delle vicende militari, arricchendo i testi con l’eccellente corredo visivo delle fotografie concesse da Ottorino e Marco Brunello. Per realizzare il lavoro, si era avvalso del contributo diaristico e documentale del generale Petitti di Roreto, comandante in zona della 35a divisione di fanteria. Altra fonte, il generale e storiografo Emilio Faldella, allora sottotenente del 3° Alpini, impegnato contro la Strafexpedition austriaca sugli altipiani. Aveva fatto buon uso, inoltre, delle testimonianze del capitano Varo Varanini, dell’artigliere Roberto Gloria e di due avversari, ufficiali dell’esercito imperial regio.
Il saliente trentino, che si insinuava dal Tirolo nella piana dell’Adige, era un “regalo” del prematuro armistizio di Villafranca del 1966 ma, soprattutto, un cuneo puntato verso il fianco secondario della nostra linea. Il Novegno ne costituiva il vertice basso e fin dai primi del Novecento gli italiani si erano preoccupati di munirlo a difesa e attrezzarlo con strade e infrastrutture logistiche.
Previsione quanto mai opportuna, perché il 30 maggio 1916, proseguendo l’offensiva austriaca verso il vicentino, i kaiserjager, occuparono senza colpo ferire il Priaforà, per un malinteso nella trasmissione e nell’esecuzione degli ordini tra gli italiani. Il capitano di fanteria che avrebbe dovuto presidiare la posizione si era perso nella nebbia, finendo con lo stazionare sul Monte Giove, anziché procedere fino alle rocce antistanti.
Uno dei motivi di interesse del lavoro di Pino Marchi, tra i non pochi, sono le lettere dei due ufficiali austriaci, testi che rivelano la spinta del nemico, incitato dai comandi a un impegno oltre le forze contro i “deboli” italiani. Nelle righe del sottotenente Fauser, si legge un evidente disprezzo. I nostri vi appaiono come combattenti pavidi, pronti alla resa e, peggio ancora, dediti all’uso di pallottole esplosive, proibite dalle convenzioni internazionali. In realtà, i nostri non usarono mai proiettili “dum dum”, anzi, accusavano a loro volta gli austriaci di averli impiegati.
Sforzi e sacrifici ricorsero anche nel campo avverso. Gli attaccanti erano costretti a impegnarsi su linee improvvisate, con viveri scarsi e restando spesso senza rifornimenti per intere giornate. In più di un caso, Fauser fa cenno a tiri corti della propria artiglieria, che facevano più danni di quella tricolore e ostacolavano i reparti all’assalto delle posizioni italiane.
Il sottotenente del 1° Reggimento cacciatori tirolesi rimase ucciso nel giugno del 1916 sul Priaforà, proprio sul massiccio del Monte Novegno.
Sotto il fuoco amico cadde anche l’altro ufficiale austriaco, il tenente Siegfried Mayr. A La Torre, sull’ultima altura davanti ad Arsiero, o colpì il tiro corto di una batteria austriaca, il lunedì di Pentecoste, il 12 giugno 1916, alle 2 del pomeriggio, mentre cercava un riparo alla sua truppa.
Da lassù il nemico vedeva Vicenza, la meta momentanea, nella pianura, quasi a toccarla e più lontano Padova.
Con un connotato di retorica, ancora in uso negli anni Settanta, Pino Marchi conclude:
“così terminano due episodi scritti da chi si opponeva alle nostre forze. Uomini valorosi, ma senza dubbio sfortunati, ai quali il destino non diede la gioia di vedere conquistata la nostra terra. Davanti ad essi c’era la 35a Divisione, quella di Petitti di Roreto; pochi uomini, pochi mezzi, ma tutti proiettati ad un unico grande scopo: ricacciare il nemico! E ci riuscirono. Lode ad essi!”.
