“Non rispondere” è un thriller psicologico di John Searles, pubblicato da Newton Compton Editori nel 2014. Pluripremiato, questo libro ha vinto l’American Library Association Alex Award e il “Boston Globe” lo ha selezionato tra i migliori Crime Novel del 2013, compare tra i 10 thriller più venduti su Amazon e nella Top Ten di “Entertainment Weekly”.
A Dundalk, nel Maryland, imperversa una bufera di neve quando, in una notte di febbraio, i genitori di Sylvie ricevono una telefonata che li spinge a precipitarsi nella chiesa del paese, dove vengono barbaramente assassinati. Sylvester e Rose Mason sono una coppia che si occupa di “demonologia”, ovvero studiano il paranormale e aiutano le “anime tormentate” a ritrovare la pace. La figlia tredicenne Sylvie, io narrante della storia, è l’unica testimone oculare del misfatto, essendo rimasta in macchina, nel parcheggio della chiesa, ad attendere il ritorno dei genitori. Quando la ragazzina, spazientita dalla loro lunga assenza, fa irruzione nell’edificio, l’assassino è ancora all’interno e la colpisce ferendola ad un orecchio. Sylvie perde i sensi e si risveglia in ospedale, dove viene messa al corrente dei fatti dall’investigatore che segue il caso.
Chi ha potuto agire con tanta ferocia e, soprattutto, perché lo ha fatto? Sylvie conserva un ricordo confuso di quella notte. Forse ha visto qualcuno, ma poi ritratta poiché non ne è più tanto sicura. Ad un anno di distanza dall’accaduto, il duplice omicidio non è ancora stato risolto. Sylvie, che nel frattempo è stata affidata alle cure dell’umorale sorella maggiore Rose, si improvvisa detective cercando di ripercorrere i momenti di quella terribile notte. La ragazzina cerca di passare in rassegna fatti e luoghi, mettendo a fuoco particolari fino ad ora ignorati.
Si alternano flashback e ricordi inquietanti, che mettono in luce una famiglia che nasconde angosciosi segreti e scavano nelle pieghe più profonde della coscienza. Fantasmi, bambole che si spostano da sole, visioni di fantasmi, da sempre hanno caratterizzato la vita di Sylvie in quella vecchia casa in stile Tudor. È giunto il momento di trovare una spiegazione logica all’incubo, anche se questo vorrà dire giungere ad una scioccante rivelazione finale.
La storia narrata in questo romanzo abbraccia l’intera umanità e ne condanna la superstizione. I personaggi che ruotano attorno a Sylvie sono schiavi delle loro debolezze e suscitano un’istintiva antipatia per i patimenti psicologici che infliggono alla giovane. Lei è la “figlia buona”, quella dalla quale non ci si aspetterebbe mai una delusione, che deve comportarsi sempre nel migliore dei modi. Per questo la lettura evoca sentimenti poco edificanti, arrivando anche a comprendere, se non proprio a giustificare, la violenta fine di questi due genitori.
John Searles ci presenta una società ottusa e bigotta che si oppone ad un sereno sviluppo dell’infanzia. Trapela un messaggio di fondo: siamo tutti dei burattini nelle mani di qualcuno che, a nostra insaputa, muove i fili.
Non tutti i particolari disseminati nella trama, alla fine, vengono svelati. Al lettore puntiglioso rimane qualche dubbio. Alcuni aspetti non sono verosimili, per esempio il fatto che la ragazzina, abbandonata a se stessa, si nutra esclusivamente di ghiaccioli alla frutta. Tuttavia, le descrizioni intense e ricche di colpi di scena ne fanno, nel complesso, un thriller avvincente.

Uno tra i piu’ bei romanzi che ho letto....certo il titolo originale e’ piu’ attinente alla storia......e’ illuminante....sorprendente...commovente!!!
