Una lunga lettera d’amore sulla musica e i suoi musicisti, delle vere leggende del jazz. Appassionato come pochi, lo scrittore britannico Geoff Dyer, classe 1958, con "Natura morta con custodia di sax. Storie di jazz" ha vinto il Somerset Maugham Award, divenendo famoso in molti paesi. Scrive per quotidiani e riviste britanniche come The Guardian, The Independent.
Un libro piacevole, interessante, dalla scrittura evocativa, fantasioso e a tratti geniale. Un insieme di episodi di vita di otto grandi jazzisti, narrati brillantemente dall’autore: Lester Young, Chet Baker, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington. Il racconto sulle loro dipendenze, droghe, alcol e la tendenza a vivere senza fissa dimora, in sintesi il jazz. In comune avevano la lotta alla violenza, alla disperazione, all’odio razziale. La loro musica, spontanea e d’improvvisazione, non era spesso riconosciuta. I musicisti neri, senza eccezione, subirono discriminazioni razziali e maltrattamenti di ogni genere.
Il jazz divampò velocemente, perché per guadagnarsi da vivere, questi grandi musicisti, suonavano sera dopo sera, anche due o tre concerti di seguito. Lo scrittore ricorda quando Martin Luther King nel 1964 andò ad inaugurare il Festival Jazz di Berlino, sottolineando con la sua presenza come la lotta dei neri per i diritti civili fosse parallela a quella dei musicisti jazz per il riconoscimento della loro arte. Il jazz, scrive Dyer, è nato dal blues, la sua musica si avvicina ai canti degli schiavi nelle piantagioni e "il suo modo di parlare al caos primordiale del pensiero". Il libro si apre con un racconto di Lester Young, nato nei primi anni del Novecento e del suo distruttivo periodo trascorso nell’esercito. Il suo sound era pigro, suonava con il sax inclinato da una parte e tanto si immergeva nell’assolo da sembrare che suonasse un flauto.
La solitudine era sempre stata nella sua musica…. Nessuno era in grado di suonare una canzone o di raccontare una storia al sax come sapeva farlo lui.
Alle vicende legate alla vita di Thelonious Monk, la sua incapacità di comunicare con chiunque che non fosse la moglie. Non gli piacevano le cose nuove, preferiva gli oggetti che usava da tempo e bisognava vederlo suonare per ascoltare la sua musica. Il suo corpo diveniva un tutt’uno con il pianoforte: un mezzo per far uscire la musica dalla sua figura. Ci arrivava con tutte le parti del corpo, usando i gomiti e scorrendo i tasti come fossero carte da gioco. Poi il racconto dell’esaurimento mentale di Bud Powell, gli effetti dell’abuso di droga su Chet Baker, fino a Duke Ellington e il suo straordinario repertorio. Piccole scene di vita combattuta di alcuni dei grandi jazzisti per i quali la musica era la loro anima che rispecchiava la loro genialità.
Per tutto il libro mi sono proposto di presentare i musicisti non come erano ma come me li immaginavo e, ovviamente, fra le due versioni può esserci un abisso: più che descrivere i musicisti in azione, ho cercato di proiettare a ritroso di trent’anni la mia esperienza di ascoltatore contemporaneo.
