L’amore viscerale di un genitore per i propri figli può sconfinare nell’ossessione di riuscire a controllare le sorti familiari. La paura del distacco riesce a trasformare un naturale desiderio di libertà e indipendenza in un affronto personale, e il bene profondo che un padre o una madre nutrono nei confronti di una loro creatura alle volte finisce per manifestarsi come un atteggiamento tirannico.
È quello che succede a Moran, capofamiglia autoritario e dai modi burberi che vive e lavora in una fattoria in Irlanda e cresce con l’aiuto della seconda moglie Rose i suoi quattro figli, Maggie, Mona, Sheila e Michael. Un quinto figlio, Luke, vive a Londra e ha interrotto del tutto i rapporti con il padre.
Quale ex ufficiale che ha combattuto durante la guerra d’indipendenza irlandese, Moran fatica ad accettare i cambiamenti sociali e culturali della metà del XX secolo e soprattutto l’emancipazione che i suoi figli cercano e trovano lontano da casa. Ad eccezione di Luke, che per primo ha lasciato il nido domestico e non è ancora riuscito a superare il muro di incomunicabilità che si è eretto tra lui e il padre, le ragazze e Michael si dimostrano molto legati al nucleo familiare e danno continue prove di affetto verso i genitori, eppure Moran rimane tenace nel suo risentimento verso i figli che hanno scelto di costruirsi una vita lontano da lui.
“Moran tra le donne” di John McGahern esplora le dinamiche interne ad una famiglia e come queste vengano messe alla prova non solo dai rapporti tra fratelli e tra genitori e figli ma anche dai cambiamenti provenienti dall’esterno. L’autore ci racconta la storia di una famiglia comune, che come tutte le famiglie affronta volta dopo volta la realtà della separazione. Uno dopo l’altro i figli di Moran avvertono una spinta a scoprire il mondo al di fuori dei confini tradizionalisti e ristretti della fattoria, e partono chi per Dublino chi per Londra.
Il romanzo riesce, con uno stile realistico e contenuto, che sembra mimare la normalità delle vite descritte, a riflettere attraverso una storia semplice sulla complessità dei rapporti che legano i membri di una famiglia. Che lo si legga dal punto di vista di un genitore che soffre di fronte alla prospettiva di vedere allontanarsi un figlio o da quello di un giovane che vuole realizzarsi e sfuggire ai vincoli familiari, “Moran tra le donne” è un libro illuminante. Con la stessa quieta forza di quell’amore profondo che lega un genitore ai suoi figli e ognuno di noi alle nostre radici, McGahern celebra la bellezza piena di contrasti dell’intreccio di sentimenti su cui poggia una famiglia, e il suo potere di farci diventare nel bene o nel male quello che siamo.
