A circa metà dell’Ottocento nel nostro Paese divenne basilare la questione unitaria. Furono scritti molti romanzi storici ambientati nel periodo dei Comuni, considerato che si trattava di un interessante esperimento politico solo italiano.
Nasce così Marco Visconti, opera di Tommaso Grossi, autore patetico e dalla vena patetica tipica del Romanticismo postmanzoniano.
Il romanzo è la storia della passione amorosa tra Ottorino Visconti e Bice del Balzo, contrastato da Marco Visconti, lo zio di Ottorino, un tempi amante della madre di Bice.
Il giovane è dalla parte di Marco sul piano politico, perché permette una maggiore libertà ai contadini, a differenza della parte primogenita dei Visconti, che opprime il popolo.
Bice da parte sua è una fanciulla bella e dolce, del tutto ignara degli intrighi politici. È tanto bella da ricordare la madre e Marco se ne sente attratto. È un uomo infelice, non più giovane, che rimpiange il passato.
Ci saranno momenti difficili nella narrazione, la grande storia che si interseca con la piccola e parecchi personaggi minori. La ricostruzione è ottima, il Medioevo descritto da Grossi è assai diverso da quello orribile di matrice anglosassone, ma il sentimentalismo e il mancato approfondimento dei personaggi rovinano un romanzo che poteva essere una valida alternativa ai Promessi Sposi.
La lingua inoltre è sciatta e pretenziosa, il che tende improponibile una lettura contemporanea, anche se di questa opera è stata realizzata una riduzione televisiva nel 1975 molto valida al tempo. In sostanza un monumento di archeologia letteraria.
