Emile Guikovaty fu un giornalista brillante e la presenza di sei sorelle che onoravano la fama della follia degli aristocratici inglesi non passava inosservata a una penna così sottile. L’autore in "Le stravaganti sorelle Mitford" ci racconta non solo della famiglia, ma anche di un mondo che ora non esiste più.
Sei sorelle nella realtà sono un numero che appare eccessivo, eppure esistettero veramente. Erano le figlie di lord Redesdale, donne stravaganti e originali in un’epoca in cui alle donne non era permesso esserlo e in ciò aiutò la loro nascita aristocratica.
Nancy, la più brutta e la più perfida, fu scrittrice di discreto talento, Jessica divenne l’amante di un aristocratico comunista (che ossimoro) e con lui tentò una fuga che scandalizzò l’Europa.
Diana sposò Mosley, capo dei fascisti inglesi, con la tacita approvazione dei genitori che ne condividevano le idee e perciò fu odiatissima dalla sorella Jessica. Unity andò oltre: si innamorò di Hitler e lo seguì con ardore nelle sue follie fino al tentato suicidio che mise in evidenza la vena di follia della famiglia.
Debora invece sposò un duca e con lui visse fino alla morte rendendo il suo castello un centro di turismo e di denaro. Pamela, la bellissima e la meno stravagante delle sorelle, scelse un uomo intelligente che divenne Premio Nobel per la fisica e si ritirò in campagna guardando divertita le sorelle.
L’autore descrive con molta vivacità il periodo fra le due guerre e può essere letta come un libro storico, ma anche (o forse soprattutto) di intrattenimento.
Una donna di oggi può leggere delle sorelle Mitford e pensare che una donna può tutto... anche rendersi ridicola. Lettura consigliata.
