“È mercoledì e ancora non siamo nemmeno arrivati in Texas. Dormiamo sempre fino a tardi e poi andiamo a farci una nuotata, ma dovremmo darci una mossa se vogliamo raggiungere la California in tempo”.
La quattordicenne Jess, sua sorella maggiore Elise, e i loro genitori a bordo di una Taurus hanno lasciato Montgomery in Alabama per giungere in un piccolo paesino della Louisiana, ennesima tappa di un viaggio che deve condurre la famiglia a Ovest, sulla costa del Pacifico. L’uomo che ha portato con sé un mucchio di opuscoli con sopra scritto “Presto le sofferenze CESSERANNO” è convinto che il mondo stia per finire ma “coloro che fanno la volontà di Dio avranno la vita eterna”. Prima di assistere alla “Seconda Venuta” però occorre convertire quante più anime possibili e il lungo tragitto appare al fervido credente una magnifica occasione. Il padre di Jess “predica solo per il coro o si ostina a convertire gli inconvertibili, ma non si perde d’animo, anzi, l’inutilità dei suoi tentativi è importante, necessaria”. Il bancone del Waffle House è appiccicoso di sciroppo e una riluttante cameriera brutta, alta e robusta lo pulisce con un panno lercio mentre Elise si mette il lucidalabbra.
“I ragazzi spesso mi dicono che è uno schianto e attendono ansiosi la mia risposta”.
I suoi genitori non se ne rendono conto “perché sono stupidi” ma l’adolescente è incinta di Dan “quello che l’ha conciata così anche se ancora non lo sa, e forse mai lo saprà”. Ogni motel appare uguale all’altro così come ciascun Starbucks lungo la Statale è uguale all’altro, è anche per questo che la madre delle ragazze anche se appare sempre più rassegnata sta covando una silenziosa ribellione. Lunga è la strada verso la Terra Promessa sotto un cielo immenso soprattutto se c’è polvere dappertutto e il caldo estivo incombe.
“Benvenuti nel grande Stato del Texas. Che il vostro sia un viaggio di piacere o di lavoro, approfittate delle tante e varie opportunità che questo Stato ha da offrirvi”.
Last Day of California è il primo romanzo di Mary Miller, nata a Jackson nel Mississippi, già autrice di una raccolta di racconti. “La differenza principale tra me ed Elise è che io mento. Faccio cose che i miei disapproverebbero, ma le faccio senza dare nell’occhio. E non mi ci devo neanche più di tanto impegnare perché lei combina tanti di quei casini che i miei si dimenticano proprio che esisto”.
