“La ragazza delle fragole” (Giunti, 2016, titolo originale The Strawberry Girl, traduzione di Silvia Castoldi) è il romanzo d’esordio dell’autrice nata in Yorkshire e che vive in Norvegia Lisa Stromme. In corso di traduzione in vari Paesi, è liberamente ispirato a un episodio poco noto della vita del pittore norvegese Edvard Munch (1863-1944).
“Ma arrivata a sedici anni stava diventando più difficile essere la Ragazza delle fragole”.
Norvegia 1893, Johanne Lien, dai capelli color del grano maturo e dagli occhi azzurri, viveva nel pittoresco villaggio di Asgarstrand, affacciato sui fiordi del Mare del Nord “in quell’azzurro immenso e scintillante che si estendeva all’infinito”. La decenne Johanne era stata ritratta dal pittore svedese Hans Olaf Heyerdahal e il quadro era stato esposto al Grand Hotel di Kristiania rendendo la ragazzina celebre
“quel soprannome non era legato tanto al mio lavoro quanto al Quadro”.
Johanne raccoglieva le fragole per venderle ai turisti che frequentavano durante l’estate la cittadina.
“La forma del paesaggio curva la luce, perciò siamo sempre immersi in una nuvola d’oro. È questo che amano gli artisti”.
La luce molto speciale di Asgardstrand attirava molti pittori tra i quali Edvard Munch. L’artista abitava in un cottage in cima a una ripida collina insieme alle sorelle. Il villaggio lo riteneva pazzo e stravagante. Alle signore veniva consigliato di distogliere gli occhi dalle sue opere giudicate volgari. La natura sensibile e percettiva di Johanne aveva compreso l’arte di Munch
“un vero artista usa la propria arte per esprimere il viaggio dell’anima”.
La sedicenne era stata scoperta dal pittore a dipingere e da quel giorno le aveva regalato un libro di pittura e le impartiva lezioni di disegno.
“Non dipingere quello che vedi, dipingi ciò che senti”.
Johanne aveva intuito che, come Munch, comunicavano entrambi tramite forme e colori.
“Cerca la luce. Lascia che il pennello faccia quello che vuole”.
La bella stagione era giunta e la severa madre
“voleva trasformarmi in qualcosa che non ero, e che non sarei mai stata”
di Johanne, le aveva trovato un lavoro da domestica presso la famiglia dell’ammiraglio Ihlen. L’anticonformista e con la brama di vivere Tullik “creatura eterea”, la figlia minore degli Ihlen, aveva da subito stretto un confidenziale rapporto di amicizia con Johanne. Pian piano che le fragole maturavano e l’estate fioriva, la ragazza assisteva alla nascente passione tra la ventenne Tullik “potrei amare la sua tristezza tutta la vita” e Edvard.
Lisa Stromme, attraverso la voce dell’acuta Johanne, fa rivivere la personalità e l’arte del pittore norvegese il quale nei suoi quadri ritraeva
“gli enigmi insolubili dell’esistenza, le cose che ci lasciano perplessi”
rappresentando la vita così come viene vissuta. In uno scenario d’incomparabile bellezza, dominato dall’azzurro interminabile e vasto del mare, personaggi ben caratterizzati e indimenticabili incantano il lettore con i loro desideri e aspirazioni in cerca di qualcosa che possa assomigliare alla felicità.
“Nei panni della Ragazza delle fragole ero libera di danzare con la natura, di correre e girovagare, senza i legami che trattenevano gli altri al loro posto”.
