“La madre sconosciuta” (Tre60 2018, titolo originale Stars across the ocean, traduzione di Maddalena Togliani) di Kimberley Freeman, narra un’appassionante storia di legami familiari e segreti che coinvolgono due donne in due secoli diversi.
Inghilterra. La trentanovenne Tori, si trovava temporaneamente a Bristol per assistere la madre settantenne Margareth, professoressa di Storia presso il Locksley College, ricoverata in clinica a causa del progredire dell’Alzheimer, malattia di cui soffriva. Tori, residente in Australia, era in piena crisi matrimoniale. La docente aveva pregato la figlia di recarsi nel suo studio per prendere le sue carte visto che era stata posta in pensionamento forzato. “Devi andare in ufficio per me”. Nello studio del Locksley College, una costruzione dell’architettura vittoriana, dove “mia madre era ben felice di imbattersi ogni giorno”, essendo una studiosa di storia del XIX Secolo, Tori, aveva trovato carte e fascicoli buttati senza criterio dentro scatoloni riuniti al centro della stanza. “Alla mia bambina, che non ho potuto tenere”. La donna era stata colpita da un fragile quadratino di carta, dalla scrittura scolorita e dalle lunghe lettere inclinate posto tra due pile di libri. Quella sola pagina di una missiva era stata la scintilla che aveva indotto Tori a commuoversi fino alle lacrime. Il motivo della commozione risiedeva non solo nella preoccupazione per la madre ma anche nel fatto che la donna non riusciva a portare a termine le sue gravidanze.
1874. Yorkshire. Inghilterra.
Agnes, in occasione del vostro diciannovesimo compleanno ho la grande gioia di congedarvi: non avrete più l’obbligo di risiedere a Perdita Hall.
Per Agnes Resolute, abbandonata presso l’orfanotrofio quando era una neonata, era giunta l’ora di affrontare la vita e il mondo. Nell’istituto la giovane, eccellente nella lettura e nella scrittura, aveva imparato a cucire e suo desiderio era di andare ad abitare in un posto dove si vedesse il mare. “Non l’aveva mai visto”. Agnes, fra le sue cose, aveva da sempre custodito un bottone raffigurante un unicorno che all’improvviso l’aveva riportata a quando a sei anni una bella e elegante giovane donna, “Genevieve. La figlia di Lord Breckby”, l’aveva avvicinata per pochi attimi.
Il dipinto di John Singer Sargent “Portrait of Mademoiselle Suzanne Poirson”, raffigurato nella copertina del libro fà da ottima cornice a un romanzo che avvince fino alla ultima pagina indagando il delicato e profondo legame tra una madre e una figlia. Tra passato e presente la vita di Tori si intreccerà con la coraggiosa e risoluta Agnes decisa a trovare chi le ha donato la vita e scoprire qual è il suo posto nel mondo.
Madri e figli stabiliscono legami con il corpo e la mente, ma anche con l’anima.
