Andare in cerca di libri antichi nelle bancarelle o nei negozi d’antiquariato costituisce il piacere del bibliofilo. Un libro raro d’annata ha sempre un odore particolare, è l’odore del tempo, può dare la sensazione che il tempo non sia passato e aprire nella mente bagliori di eternità. Se poi l’argomento trattato nel volume si presta a tali considerazioni, il gioco è fatto! Ci si trova quasi in un’altra dimensione, quella misteriosa dello spirito nella quale tutto è qui e ora.
Tanto mi è accaduto scovando il libro di Alice Bailey La coscienza dell’atomo (Fratelli Bocca Editori, pp. 160, 1958) tradotto da Olga Batà.
Alice Bailey (1880 - 1949) è stata un’esponente di spicco all’interno della Società Teosofica fondata da Madame Helena Blavatsky. Molte persone di alta levatura ne hanno fatto parte. Ricordiamo en passant il pittore Kandinskij, fondatore della pittura astratta; egli trovò la propria ispirazione a contatto con i teosofi, comprendendo che dietro il visibile è celata un’altra realtà non percepibile dagli occhi, ma reale in quanto substrato. Si tratta della concezione del campo bioelettricomagnetico e della condizione ondulatoria e vivente dell’essere. Secondo il fisico francese Jean Èmile Charon l’elettrone possiede una "testa" intelligente. Tale è la visione di Bailey in questo trattato affascinante.
L’atomo a cui fa riferimento nel titolo non è quello attuale dei fisici, a sua volta divisibile; piuttosto è parente dell’atomismo greco di Democrito ed Epicuro, i quali alludevano alla struttura di base della materia percepita viva, a un corpuscolo non ulteriormente scindibile.
All’origine del cosmo l’autrice riconosce la coscienza assoluta, o Dio, da cui il tutto è emanato, di cui la coscienza umana è un raggio, identica per natura. Le caratteristiche della coscienza assoluta sono viste come una trinità qualitativa: Intelligenza-Attività, Amore-Sapienza, Volontà-Potere.
Se la religione poggia i suoi dogmi sulla fede del credente, non dimostrabile dalla ragione, la teosofia, quasi fosse una continuazione moderna dello gnosticismo, basa le sue affermazioni sullo studio di ogni disciplina, senza preclusioni, inoltre su un cammino ascetico di meditazione includente mente e corpo. A un certo sviluppo spirituale la propria mente diventa il campo di ricerca, il pensiero giunge là dove sperimenta se stesso ed è quanto Aristotele ha chiamato "pensiero di pensiero". Anche Aristotele era un iniziato, in particolare ai misteri di Samotracia. Scrive Bailey:
"Al pensatore comune, è praticamente impossibile il riconoscimento della coscienza assoluta. Una definizione della coscienza assoluta è la seguente: "quella coscienza in cui è compresa ogni cosa, tanto il possibile quanto il reale", e concerne ogni cosa concepibile, passata, presente e futura."
La teosofa poco oltre si chiede che cosa sia la coscienza universale, differente per grado dall’Assoluto. Questa la risposta: è "coscienza che contiene anche il concetto di spazio, di luogo e del succedersi degli eventi che ad essi si associano".
Interessante notare che anche per Kant i concetti di tempo e spazio sono dati a priori, precedono il ragionamento.
Con un processo di restringimento, Bailey definisce quindi la coscienza individuale come "quel tanto di coscienza universale che una unità separata, può concepire per sé stessa". Considera l’uomo come "atomo o cellula entro il corpo di una Grande Entità". Per acconsentire bisogna essere giunti a vivere l’esperienza panica, il panpsichismo, a sentire il Vivente ovvero la coscienza presente in tutti i regni della natura, compreso il minerale.
Nel libro si trovano passi di natura scientifica, come per esempio lo studio delle pietre che reagiscono agli stimoli e presentano anche segni di fatica, ma pure riferimenti alla poesia, momenti lirici carichi di sentimento, per esempio la citazione di Browning "Nell’uomo comincia una tendenza verso Dio", da mettere in relazione con altre affermazioni, quali:
"La vita soggettiva può essere una al pari dell’energia che fluisce fra i sistemi solari, mentre nella forma fisica di essi trovasi la diversità."
Qui appare l’intuizione della "particella" la cui vibrazione determina la materia: il bosone di Higgs? Ma per Bailey il soggettivo "precede" in senso ideativo l’oggettivo, la materia che è energia addensata e precipitata; e il soggettivo, come per san Paolo, è l’amore di Dio, la sua gloria.
