La collera di Attila

Nel primo decennio del XXI secolo molti scrissero romanzi su Attila, più o meno veritieri. Uno di questi, pubblicato da Piemme nel 2007, è La collera di Attila di José Luis Rodríguez del Corral (trad. S. Sichel).
Il protagonista del romanzo è Concordio, giovane della Gallia che durante un viaggio incrocia la carovana di Severiana, nobildonna romana perversa che lo porta con sé per farne il proprio amante. La villa di Severiana viene attaccata dai Goti, che uccidono i padroni di casa. Concordio fugge, ma intanto giunge la notizia della collera di Attila nei confronti di Valentiniano: l’unno scende in Italia perché l’imperatore ha imprigionato la sorella, di cui Attila è innamorato.
La minaccia è grave, tanto che Papa Leone Magno intraprende un viaggio nel Nord Italia per impedire l’ingresso del feroce unno.
Altri personaggi fanno da contorno alle vicende, Magda, la bionda crudele che Concordio ama, Salvia, la fanciulla che si veste da uomo per sfuggire alla violenza, Paolino da Nola, il cristiano intransigente, uno dei personaggi meno simpatici e tanti altri, storici e non.
Che dire? La collera di Attila è un libro che non rispetta assolutamente la verità storica e anzi si può definire di avventura, un epigono spagnolo di Salgari per le azioni guerresche. I dialoghi sono veloci, i personaggi ben costruiti, le descrizioni dei paesaggi credibili. È un’opera buona per rilassarsi un pomeriggio, non impegnativa intellettualmente.
L’unica pecca è però proprio Attila, che a mio giudizio non doveva essere romanticizzato. Di sicuro non lo avrebbe gradito.
