L’avremmo chiamata la battaglia di Nassiryah: il 6 aprile 2004 siamo stati in guerra in Iraq per un giorno intero, ma se n’è saputo poco, eppure avremmo avuto di che vantarci del comportamento dei nostri soldati. Oggi possiamo apprendere nel dettaglio la ricostruzione di quella giornata, in un volume della casa editrice bassanese Itinera Progetti, “La battaglia dei ponti. Iraq 2004: Operazione Antica Babilonia III” (maggio 2018, 212 pagine, 21 euro), a firma di un protagonista degli eventi, il generale Luigi Scollo.
Allora colonnello, comandava l’unità di punta di tutto il dispositivo italiano, costituita dal suo 11º Reggimento Bersaglieri ed altri reparti delle Forze Armate italiane. Veterano di tante operazioni di pace nazionali, è in quiescenza dal 2014 e si è dato alla divulgazione, scrivendo testi di storia militare e del Corpo dei Bersaglieri, pubblicati sempre da Itinera.
Nella prefazione, il generale di Corpo d’Armata Gian Marco Chiarini, che comandava l’intera Task Force Ariete, si domanda se in Italia vi sia stata consapevolezza di quanto accaduto. La risposta è negativa e leggendo il libro del gen. Scollo c’è da stupirsi dell’indifferenza del Paese, chissà se dovuta più alla disinformazione (per tanti versi giustificata dall’esigenza di tutelare i nostri ragazzi in terra irachena) o piuttosto all’indifferenza congenita, se non ostilità, di parte dei nostri connazionali nei confronti dei militari.
A conclusione del conflitto scatenato dal presidente Bush contro Saddam Hussein, sulla base di prove costruite artificiosamente per supportare la volontà aggressiva della Casa Bianca (il generale non fa sconti al leader americano), l’Italia era impegnata da metà 2003 in quella che sulla carta e nelle intenzioni era una missione di mantenimento della pace, nell’Iraq devastato dalla sfida mortale tra sciiti e sunniti. Le regole d’ingaggio per la peacekeeping non lasciavano libertà d’iniziativa, ma dai rapporti dell’intelligence e dalla verifica sul campo, i nostri soldati si erano resi conto di fronteggiare un’autentica rivolta armata contro gli occidentali. Si trovavano costretti ad operazioni di controguerriglia per contenere fazioni armate di kalashnikov e lanciarazzi rpg, armi elementari ma insidiose. Dovevano vedersela anche col pericolo rappresentato dagli ordigni artigianali e dalle autobombe, che minacciavano postazioni fisse e mezzi blindati o corazzati in transito.
L’attentato alla Base Maestrale dei Carabinieri, sempre a Nassiriyah, il 12 novembre 2003, aveva evidenziato la difficoltà della situazione e i nostri erano molto “motivati” nei confronti dei miliziani iracheni. Il problema era agire con determinazione, ma esercitando un uso equilibrato della forza, per evitare di ritrovarsi contro anche la popolazione civile, che non si dimostrava ostile, pur non collaborando con quelli che ai loro occhi rappresentavano pur sempre l’esercito di una potenza occupante.
A chiedere l’intervento delle truppe italiane era stato il Comando inglese, responsabile di zona. I miliziani sciiti mahdisti di Al Sadr avevano occupato i tre ponti sull’Eufrate, tagliato la strada per Bassora e bloccato anche il traffico civile. I negozianti iracheni non potevano rifornirsi di merci e i cittadini erano molto provati dalla situazione.
All’alba del 6 aprile 2004, scattò l’Operazione “Porta Pia”, con un primo dispiegamento di forze, affidato all’11 Bersaglieri, mentre reparti scelti aggiravano la città, prendendo posizione sulla sponda nord del ponte Charlie ed entrando già in azione, perché attaccate.
Il tentativo del colonnello Scollo di risolvere la faccenda mostrando i muscoli non ebbe il successo sperato. La colonna di veicoli militari e otto blindati Centauro si presentò davanti alla sponda sud del primo ponte, ma i combattenti avversari non arretrarono. Così, i 500 uomini della Task Force dovettero impiegare le armi.
Erano Bersaglieri, Marò del San Marco, Carabinieri del Gis, Paracadutisti, Cavalleria corazzata. In coda un’ambulanza. Anche dall’altra parte usavano ambulanze, sequestrandole dagli ospedali cittadini per trasportare munizioni o anche per scagliarle all’occorrenza contro gli italiani. Ma i miliziani non si dimostravano dei gran combattenti (sparavano male, per fortuna, dice Scollo) e le mitragliatrici, i razzi anticarro e qualche cannonata dei Centauro tenevano a bada l’offensiva di quei mezzi senza sirena e lampeggiante.
Preparazione, coraggio e buon armamento delle forze italiane consentirono di spuntarla, non senza qualche ferito non grave, ma il terzo obiettivo risultò imprendibile. Non era difeso meglio, ma affollato di donne e bambini e gli italiani non mettono in pericolo i civili: così si dovette rinunciare a liberare il ponte. Si definì di fatto un accordo: i nostri restarono sulla parte sud, i miliziani lasciarono la nord alla polizia locale.
Erano stati sparati 30mila colpi dalle armi italiane e una decina di razzi. Quattordici i feriti, in totale. Ai mahdisti era andata molto peggio, i nostri tiratori scelti fecero strage, risparmiando bersagli innocenti.
Al termine della prima battaglia delle Forze Armate italiane dalla seconda guerra mondiale, una città venne restituita alla legittima popolazione.
