Con “L’uomo che fece il giro del mondo a piedi” (Edizioni dei Cammini, 2015), Dave Kunst ci racconta una storia incredibile, vera, suggestiva, che ben presto diverrà un film. Nel 1970 i fratelli Dave e John lasciarono Waseca, una cittadina del Minnesota, per intraprendere il loro viaggio: il giro del mondo a piedi. Nel clima politico di quegli anni, l’America in guerra con il Vietnam, lo sbarco sulla Luna di Armstrong e Aldrin, la Guerra fredda, i due fratelli conducevano una vita normale e tranquilla divisi tra il lavoro in ufficio e il bar con gli amici a bere boccali di birra, e poco sapevano del mondo e di come viaggiare. Nella loro normalità erano seriamente convinti che avrebbero trovato difficoltà solo con i comunisti. A nessuno sarebbe mai venuto in mente di girare il mondo a piedi, eppure per Dave sembrò essere la sua sfida, il suo sogno da realizzare. Armati della loro semplicità e voglia di conoscenza, con la brava mula Willie, carica di provviste, il 20 giugno Dave, di trent’anni sposato e con tre figli, e John di appena ventitré, con mille dollari in tasca, si incamminarono ignari e felici, pensando che avrebbero attraversato i continenti in modo avventuroso come facevano di solito in Minnesota, quando si fermavano nei campi, al ciglio di una strada, per mangiare e dormire.
Un viaggio temerario e ingenuo costellato di incontri indimenticabili, di amori furtivi, e di visioni di paesaggi mozzafiato, di frontiere e divieti, di caos e del silenzio della libertà. Il libro si apre a Kabul, due anni dopo la loro partenza, dove Dave e John vengono attaccati nella notte da una banda di guerriglieri afghani. John viene ucciso e Dave, ferito al torace, si salva fingendosi morto.
“… non ho intenzione di morire in Afghanistan, barcollo e grido per il dolore ho nel cuore e nel petto. Sono più solo di quanto non sia mai stato in vita mia. Mi metto a parlare con John. Devo essere svenuto, perché mi ritrovo disteso per terra, mezzo appoggiato al muretto. Trovo a fatica una posizione rannicchiata e metto la mano destra sulla ferita … “
Nonostante la tragedia, Dave non si fermerà, vorrà onorare la morte del fratello e riprendere il cammino. Sarà affiancato da Pete, l’altro suo fratello, per portare a termine quel viaggio che sarà la loro ricerca personale dei luoghi del mondo. Il libro è corredato di bellissime foto in bianco e nero, immagini che hanno catturato per sempre i loro diversi momenti nei quasi cinque anni di cammino attraverso l’America, l’Australia, l’Asia e l’Europa. Da Waseca a New York, da Lisbona a Venezia, in piazza San Marco accolti dal sindaco della città, da Istanbul a Calcutta, con i suoi odori nauseabondi, carica di un’umanità stremata dalla povertà, fino ai paesaggi desertici australiani con strade infinite in mezzo al nulla.
Un lungo viaggio di 15.000 miglia, ventuno paia di scarpe usurate, milioni di passi e la sua esperienza annotata su fogli di carta gelosamente custoditi, sugli usi e costumi dei popoli dei continenti attraversati, sulla paura affrontata la notte, sulle piogge incessanti e sul caldo afoso della mattina, sulle malattie contratte e sulle minacce di banditi e ladri, ma sempre fiducioso nel voler realizzare il suo sogno.
“Sì, fare il giro del mondo a piedi ha cambiato la mia esistenza. Ho vissuto un rapporto d’amore e d’affetto per più di ventisette anni e nessuno mi può togliere le esperienze che ho avuto e ciò che ho realizzato. Ho camminato in giro per mondo; e se Dave Kunst è riuscito a fare il giro del mondo a piedi può fare qualsiasi cosa, e lo potete anche voi!”
