L’olivo della pase. La storia di Capodistria, città istriana raccontata a tutti

Dopo decenni di oblio di fronte alla storia e alla verità, in Italia è stato istituito il Giorno del ricordo, che cade il 10 febbraio di ogni anno, per non dimenticare il doloroso esodo di trecentomila persone dall’Istria e dalla Dalmazia e la tragedia delle foibe, anfratti carsici in cui vennero gettate migliaia di persone, quasi sempre ancora vive, la maggior parte italiane ma non solo, per motivi ideologici e razziali, durante e dopo la Seconda guerra mondiale del secolo scorso.
I regimi liberticidi, siano essi nati in seno al comunismo o al nazismo, sono piaghe da sanare con la fratellanza tra i popoli e con la memoria. Questo giorno è appaiato al Giorno della memoria, che non dimentica il genocidio degli ebrei.
Il mio preambolo si rende necessario per la presentazione di un libro speciale, edito a Trieste a cura dell’Unione degli Istriani, Libera Provincia dell’Istria in Esilio, per la preservazione delle tradizioni di gente pacifica e laboriosa. Esse, come tutte le tradizioni, sono un patrimonio prezioso e accrescono quell’humanitas di cui tutti ci sentiamo parte. Il libro è L’olivo della pase di Mariella Zorzet Fragiacomo (2020), con sottotitolo "La storia di Capodistria, città istriana raccontata a tutti". Davvero a tutti, il titolo in dialetto triestino attesta il sentimento popolare e la poesia di cui sono impregnate le pagine, con il racconto plurimillenario di una città che assurge a simbolo di libertà e di cultura identitaria.
L’avvocato Piero Sardos Albertini, presidente della "Fameia Capodistriana" (famiglia capodistriana, sigla che ha in sé il sapore dolce di casa, ma qui si tratta di una casa perduta) scrive nella prefazione:
"Questa storia infatti è rivolta ai bambini, ragazzi ed adulti che vogliono raccontarla ai propri figli o nipoti o allievi scolastici. […] questa storia è rivolta ai valori della civiltà istriana, alla consapevolezza storica, privilegiando il rispetto e la pace tra le popolazioni.”
Il tono usato dall’autrice è affabulatorio, quasi si trattasse di una fiaba, e in effetti possiamo considerarla così, non nel senso che i fatti narrati non siano veri, tutt’altro, essi corrispondono alla verità e spesso grondano sangue, sono anche intrisi di lacrime e nostalgia; piuttosto la “fiaba” qui sta a significare il tono affascinate, oltre che l’elemento eterno e paradigmatico del sentimento di patria e appartenenza, ed è quanto Hermann Hesse ha celebrato con il vocabolo "Heimat", la piccola patria, custode del nostro essere autentico. Nel libro di Zorzet Fragiacomo sentiamo bruciare il fuoco della vestale che non deve estinguersi, pena la perdita delle memorie preziose. Chi siamo noi? Siamo la sintesi degli antenati, con la funzione di accrescere la nostra storia. E, afferma la scrittrice:
"La "storia" ha sempre una morale che va al di là dei tempi, oltre a caratterizzarsi per le vicende e i personaggi relativi al contesto a cui risale."
L’albero di cui si parla è un ulivo centenario posto nella piazza principale della città, Piazza Brolo, testimone del trascorrere del tempo. La "pase" (pace) è autentica, ma sottintende che il diritto dei popoli e dei singoli venga rispettato. Riguardo all’assetto politico territoriale dell’Istria, le decisioni prese alla fine del secondo conflitto mondiale non hanno tenuto conto del diritto di autodeterminazione dei popoli, stabilito già nella Rivoluzione Francese e sancito il 14 agosto 1941 nella Carta Atlantica e nella Carta delle Nazioni Unite il 26 giugno 1945. A guerra conclusa in Istria e Dalmazia è mancato il voto popolare riguardo alla decisione a quale nazione appartenere, da cui l’esodo epocale di gente che si sentiva italiana da sempre.
Capodistria nasce romana con il nome di "Capris". Sua ricchezza è il mare, sono le saline. Nel 78 a. C. viene costruita la via Flavia. Il racconto si snoda nei secoli, illustrato da foto e da dipinti di pittori capodistriani di valore, quali Nello Pacchietto e Dino Predonzani. Fra i grandi nomi di personaggi nati a Capodistria (non sono pochi) vanno ricordati almeno l’umanista Pier Paolo Vergerio, vescovo perseguitato dall’Inquisizione per le sue idee religiose tolleranti verso la Riforma; Gian Rinaldo Carli economista illuminista, il medico Santorio Santorio seguace di Galilei; in tempi recenti il vescovo Antonio Santin, il patriota Guglielmo Oberdan, lo scrittore Milovan Gilas, la cui onestà intellettuale e la difesa della verità storica relativa all’occupazione titina e la repressione attuata contro la popolazione italiana gli costò il carcere e la proibizione dei suoi libri in patria.
Lasciamo al lettore l’entusiasmo di conoscere tanti volti e tante vicende, sicuramente maestre di vita. Termino con una frase di Gandhi:
“La giustizia nei confronti dell’individuo, fosse anche il più umile, è tutto. Il resto viene dopo.”
