“La scienziata che sconfisse la malaria” è il sottotitolo di “L’erba magica di TuYouyou” (Editoriale Scienza 2018, titolo originale “The Magical Herb of Tu Youyou”, traduzione di Beatrice Masini, illustrato da Alice Coppini) di Xu Lu, storia vera del medico cinese Tu Youyou che sconfisse la malaria, prima donna a vincere il Premio Nobel per la Medicina nel 2015.
“Quando tornava a casa da scuola, Youyou passava tutti i giorni per una stradina lastricata. E tutte le volte quando era quasi all’angolo, incrociava un vecchio che tornava dalla campagna”.
Negli anni Trenta del Secolo scorso, a Ningbo, sulla costa orientale della Cina, una bambina intelligente e curiosa, era rimasta colpita da un anziano uomo canuto, dalla lunga barba bianca, il quale portava un cesto sulla schiena pieno di erbe appena colte.
Un giorno Youyou aveva visto che sopra le erbe l’uomo aveva infilato un ramo carico di frutti rossi. Alla bambina era venuta voglia di assaggiarli: sembravano dolcissimi e aveva deciso di seguire il vecchio curvo che camminava a passo lento.
Piano piano, l’uomo e la bambina erano arrivati davanti alla porta di una piccola bottega. Il barbuto, una volta posato il cesto a terra, aveva spostato le erbe una a una in un altro cesto più largo. Allora il vecchio si era accorto di lei e le disse: “Bambina, fra poco sarà buio. È ora che tu torni a casa” e aveva offerto alla bambina due piccoli frutti che aveva subito assaggiato trovandoli dolci con un retrogusto aspro. Il vecchio praticava la medicina cinese in città e la piccola bottega era il suo regno di medicina cinese.
Il medico erborista aveva fatto entrare la sua ospite nel locale per mostrarle un mobile di legno che conteneva diverse erbe medicinali. L’erborista aveva impartito una lezione all’intuitiva scolara che aveva compreso che le piante potevano avere la capacità di curare le persone malate. Tante erano state le perspicaci domande di Youyou forse perché presagiva quanto quella lezione l’avrebbe portata lontano. La piccola Youyou avrebbe raggiunto traguardi inimmaginabili grazie allo studio della medicina cinese e al suo tenace impegno.
Un albo prezioso e unico, arricchito da belle tavole, che illustra ai lettori l’incredibile storia di Tu Youyou, donna coraggiosa e caparbia, la quale non si arrese fino a quando, grazie a una geniale intuizione, non aveva scoperto la cura contro la malaria. Il volume termina con una nota che informa sulla vita dell’illustre scienziata. Il medico Youyou ricorda a chi legge di non abbandonare mai le proprie passioni e i propri sogni.
