Tra il 1933 e il 1940, negli anni dell’esilio l’unico luogo in cui Walter Benjamin si trovò a suo agio, in cui si sentì di casa, fu il suo posto alla Biblioteca Nazionale di Parigi, lo scrittoio dove Gisèle Freund lo ritrasse, con la superficie vitrea che gli stava davanti, inviolato cerchio magico, terreno vergine riservato alla figure che andava evocando.
"L’angelo della storia" è un bellissimo e affascinante libro su uno degli intellettuali più geniali e rivoluzionari del Novecento, Walter Benjamin. Di formazione marxista, ebreo, critico con la società dei consumi, un pensatore sul misticismo ebraico e materialismo storico, venne perseguitato in mezza Europa a seguito delle leggi razziali, un autore che ancora oggi simboleggia il nuovo pensiero filosofico moderno. Una lettura coinvolgente; uno di quei libri che trovano immediatamente posto nella mia biblioteca.
Bruno Arpaia, scrittore campano, giornalista, consulente editoriale e traduttore di letteratura spagnola e latinoamericana, racconta straordinariamente, in questo suo romanzo, gli ultimi anni del filosofo tedesco. Gli anni duri dell’esilio, di quando errante in patria e fuori, era in cerca della salvezza con un visto per Londra per Dora e suo figlio Stefan, in cerca della salvezza per sé e per i suoi scritti. Tra le sue carte anche la stampa di un quadro di Klee, l’Angelus Novus. Un angelo con le ali distese, gli occhi spalancati e la bocca aperta, che sembra allontanarsi da qualcosa. Il viso è rivolto al passato, ai suoi piedi una serie di eventi catastrofici, rovine e macerie.
Nel suo ultimo tempo, prima di suicidarsi a Port Bou nei Pirenei, il destino vorrà farlo incrociare con Laureano, spagnolo, socialista, combattente nella guerra civile spagnola che aveva partecipato all’offensiva contro Oviedo. Due diverse personalità, con appartenenza a mondi così lontani tra loro. L’uno letterato, studioso, colmo ormai di una disperazione profonda, perché sentiva la sua vita giunta alla fine; l’altro avventuroso, balordo, circondato da donne e che con il contrabbando riusciva a cavarsela.
Benjamin aveva dovuto lasciare la Germania in fretta come avevano fatto i suoi amici Bloch, Brecht e si era rifugiato a Parigi. Una città che conosceva bene, parlava correttamente la lingua, conosceva la letteratura francese in quanto traduttore in Germania di Proust e Baudelaire. Parigi nel 1934 aveva un volto arcigno per un uomo come lui solo, senza soldi, un ebreo che fuggiva. L’esistenza di Walter Benjamin era sempre stata segnata dalla sofferenza, pur nascendo in una famiglia agiata era stato costretto a guadagnarsi da vivere ben presto. Riservato, solitario, aveva scelto il suo isolamento e pochi amici: la fotografa Fisèle Freund, Hannah Arendt, Adrienne Monnier, Sylvia Beach, Arthur Koestler e Georges Bataille. Il suo lavoro, Passages, che rimarrà incompiuto, lo terrà sempre occupato.
Non volle mai fermarsi nonostante le difficoltà oggettive, il clima buio dei suoi tempi e le rinunce che avrebbero sfiancato chiunque. Disponeva dello stretto necessario e nei suoi sette anni di esilio a Parigi fu costretto a cambiare casa diciotto volte, vivendo il più delle volte con persone sconosciute o emigrati, in piccole stanze di alberghi fatiscenti. Riusciva a lavorare alla Biblioteca Nazionale o nei bistrot delle Rive gauche, dove prendendo una tazzina di caffè, i camerieri lo lasciavano tranquillo, intento a scrivere. In una Parigi di colpo grigia, occupata dai nazisti, con i palazzi svuotati e tutti a cercare una via di fuga Benjamin consegnerà a Baitalle una borsa con i suoi scritti e fuggirà verso il confine spagnolo sperando di potersi imbarcare, destinazione New York.
La sua fu una lunga e tormentosa attesa quotidiana: era preda della paura di cadere nelle mani delle SS e del panico di sentirsi costantemente braccato anche tra una moltitudine di persone. Lui l’angelo della storia, consegnerà le sue ultime cartelle a Laureano e porrà fine alla sua vita. "L’angelo della storia" è un’opera tra la biografia e il romanzo dal fascino notevole nella quale ogni momento narrativo è di particolare importanza e nella quale predomina un intenso valore lirico.
