Generalmente, le biografie interessano solo i fans di una determinata celebrità. In effetti, solo gli appassionati possono arrivare ad apprezzare i racconti sull’infanzia dei loro beniamini, su come abbiano iniziato a suonare, recitare o che altro e sulle cause per cui i loro primi tre matrimoni siano finiti in un niente di fatto. Ci sono però personaggi che, per il loro particolare vissuto o per qualche peculiarità, arrivano ad appassionare anche chi normalmente non è un fruitore del loro lavoro e, in certi casi, a trasformarsi in vere e proprie icone, esempi da seguire al di là della loro arte.
Un esponente di questa categoria è senz’altro Tony Iommi, chitarrista dei Black Sabbath. Sebbene la sua figura sia messa in penombra da quella ben più eclatante e impressionante di Ozzy Osbourne, Iommi ha una storia particolare da raccontare, una storia di coraggio e di reazione alle difficoltà della vita. Chi pensa che, per lui, il percorso sia stato lastricato di rose e fiori, si sbaglia di grosso e può verificarlo leggendo "Iron Man – Il mio viaggio tra paradiso & inferno con i Black Sabbath", un’autobiografia consistente, ma scorrevole e divisa in capitoli brevi.
La carriera musicale di Tony Iommi sembrava finita ancor prima di iniziare, quando, proprio durante il suo ultimo turno di lavoro prima di lasciare la fabbrica per dedicarsi al professionismo musicale, un macchinario del quale non era esperto gli tranciò via di netto le ultime falangi della mano destra, che, essendo mancino, usava per eseguire gli accordi.
La salvezza dal baratro fu un disco del chitarrista Django Reinhardt, regalatogli dal suo ex datore di lavoro. L’esempio del celebre francese, eccellente musicista malgrado un incidente che gli aveva menomato la mano sinistra, fu di ispirazione di Iommi, che si costruì da solo, con i tappi del detersivo, delle protesi per le dita mozzate. Questo espediente utilizzato per poter tornare a suonare fece sì che il suo suono diventasse particolarmente scuro e caratteristico, tanto che molti indicano lui come padre dell’heavy metal. Questo, però, è solo il più eclatante degli episodi che costellano la sua carriera e quella dei Black Sabbath: ve ne sono di esilaranti e di molto tristi, ci sono la droga e la ricerca di normalità, gli scherzi e le grandi amicizie, i successi e i lutti. Il tutto raccontato con molta semplicità, evitando le spiegazioni troppo “tecniche”, ma raccontando anche curiosità sulla nascita delle varie canzoni, tanto che anche chi non conosce gran che della produzione dei Black Sabbath viene spinto all’ascolto dei brani che vengono nominati nel libro.
Un appunto che si può fare alla scrittura è che risulta eccessivamente frammentaria. I capitoli brevi sono un grande pregio, ma la narrazione risulta a tratti più simile a una serie di episodi raccontati durante una serata fra amici che a una storia che scorra fluida come farebbe un romanzo. Questo è sicuramente il limite di un libro che, in ogni caso, risulta veramente piacevole e interessante, non solo per i fans.
