Le interiora della giovenca sono rosse e floride, secondo i sacerdoti il verdetto del dio Serapide è chiaro: la divinità approva che la doppia corona di Alessandria e Menfi ricada sulla testa di Berenice la Splendente e che una donna possa tornare a far grande l’Egitto nel primo secolo dopo Cristo. Ma pur essendo l’unica legittima è la meno amata delle figlie del faraone Tolomeo il Flautista e non è nemmeno la numero uno del romanzo storico di Emily Holleman “Il segreto di Cleopatra” (Newton Compton, marzo 2016, pp. 378, euro 12,00).
La vera eroina è la piccola ma determinata Arsinoe, sebbene abbia solo nove anni quando la sorellastra sale sul trono, spodestando il padre. La principessa è solo una bambina ma sa bene di non essere la favorita, né potrebbe mai diventarlo, da terza ed ultima tra le figlie. C’è Berenice in testa all’asse dinastico dei Tolomei, famiglia di nobile origine macedone. Ha venti anni ed è nata da un matrimonio tra fratello e sorella, Tolomeo e Trifena. Nelle case regnanti egizie erano d’uso le nozze in famiglia. La regina era stata poi ripudiata, per le grazie di una concubina, che aveva dato quattro figli a quell’imbelle del Neo Dioniso.
Prima era nata Cleopatra, che ora, appena undicenne, sembrava più una dea che una ragazzina. Due anni dopo era arrivata Arsinoe e più tardi due maschi, entrambi chiamati Tolomeo, sempre secondo tradizione.
Se si ritrova sola, quasi prigioniera della sorellastra, che ha sollevato il popolo contro il padre, “è tutta colpa di Roma, quella malefica città”, pensa la bambina. In effetti, invece di fermare i Romani, i Tolomei tramavano in segreto per guadagnarne la benevolenza, tradendo gli Egiziani, pronti invece a contrastare fermamente il passo alle legioni. Fomentata da Berenice, la ribellione aveva costretto il faraone a fuggire, senza nemmeno la scorta, portando con sé la figlia Cleopatra. Anche la mamma “concubina” si era allontanata con i due ultimogeniti, gli unici per i quali avesse occhi, da quando erano nati.
Così Arsinoe è rimasta sola, ma che temperamento. Questa piccola si rifiuta di piangere. La maggior parte delle bambine lo farebbe, ma lei no.
Di certo, non le mancherebbero ragioni per preoccuparsi. Trifena la vorrebbe morta, per sbarazzarsi dell’illegittima, ma gli eunuchi hanno ricordato a Berenice che la terzogenita è molto amata a palazzo. Nonostante l’età infantile sa farsi apprezzare. Salvare la bimba abbandonata potrebbe attrarre il favore degli egiziani e la nuova sovrana sceglie di farlo. Molto in fondo, prova un sentimento per quella bambina indifesa e poi è l’ultima che può rappresentare una minaccia.
Due forti figure femminili: una ragazza regina e una bimba. Pur ambientato nel primo secolo, il romanzo ha contenuti molto moderni. La primogenita si batte contro una tradizione che vuole gli uomini sul trono e non favorisce le donne.
Il titolo richiama Cleopatra, ma la trama si dedica alle due sorelle meno conosciute. A capitoli alterni, tutti intitolati rispettivamente “La maggiore” e “La minore”, si seguono le vicende delle due “sorellastre coraggio”. Una è schiacciata dal suo ruolo. Non le mancano capacità di governo e risolutezza, ma deve misurarsi ogni giorno con i compromessi, battersi continuamente contro quello che “conviene” o “non conviene” fare, guardarsi costantemente dai falsi consiglieri, in una corte di serpi.
In quella tana infame che è la reggia di Alessandria; l’altra, piccola donna, lotta per la vita.
Le legioni di Roma si avvicinano. Recheranno buone notizie oltre alle aquile sui vessilli, simbolo del potere della Città eterna?
Con loro tornerà il padre, insieme all’amata Clea. Ma cosa sarà di lei, Arsinoe, se mai dovessero riapparire?
Folgorante romanzo d’esordio per Emily Holleman, che come si legge nel suo sito (www.emilyholleman.com), sta lavorando su una serie di romanzi storici che reinventano la saga di Cleopatra dal punto di vista della sorella minore, Arsinoe. Vive a Brooklyn, è laureata alla Yale University, già editor per una testata on line. Particolare che sottolinea nella biografia: è anche lei una sorella minore.
