Era una città d’arte, Dresda, 650mila abitanti, un centro culturale non particolarmente industrializzato, non il classico obiettivo militare, ma in poche ore l’aviazione alleata e il feuersturm, la tempesta di fuoco, l’hanno trasformata nell’Hiroshima tedesca. Un nome associato all’annientamento, il 13 febbraio 1945, come si legge nella cronaca quasi filmica di un volume Mondadori, di Sinclair McKay, critico letterario londinese, non storico di professione, Il fuoco e l’oscurità. Dresda 1945 (collana Le scie, febbraio 2020, 440 pagine).
Cresce come una sceneggiatura. Nei primi capitoli l’autore descrive la situazione, indica i luoghi, delinea condizioni sociali e aspettative della popolazione, fissa i caratteri e presenta qualche testimone che più avanti ricorrerà nella ricostruzione della tragedia. Poi si sposta nel campo avverso, fissa le strategie dei comandi angloamericani, fa conoscere gli equipaggi dei bombardieri e il loro stress, controllato da eccitanti. Solo dopo, passa all’orrore.
Nella Firenze sull’Elba, la gente tremava al pensiero dei sovietici, che avanzavano da est brutalizzando la popolazione e violentando le donne, a quanto si sentiva dire (e si rivelerà vero). Sapevano dei tremendi bombardamenti alleati, ma Dresda non sembrava un bersaglio: tanta architettura e musei, poca industria, uno stabilimento Zeiss Ikon di strumenti ottici di precisione e laboratori dove si conducevano sperimentazioni di catodica e valvole termoioniche. Aveva subito solo due incursioni aeree e se gli aerei passavano erano macchie argentee alte in quota, i bombardieri americani che andavano a colpire pesantemente altri centri, come Magdeburgo, 220 km a nordovest. Pochi in città si erano accorti dell’intensificarsi nei primi di febbraio dei voli di ricognizione nel cielo urbano.
Non sapevano nemmeno che, soprattutto tra gli inglesi dall’altra parte del fonte, si consumava un conflitto tra il comandante della RAF, Portal, che concepiva solo bombardamenti su obiettivi industriali e il maresciallo Harris, a capo del Bomber Command, che estendeva la strategia alla popolazione civile, a scopo “terroristico”. Giudicava “ridicole” le bombe formato standard da 250 libbre (113 chili), ad alto potenziale esplosivo, ne pretendeva di più grandi, associate a barili incendiari, per un effetto concentrato sulle città. Scatenando tanti focolai, difficili da spegnere, avrebbero stremato il personale antincendio e terrorizzato la popolazione superstite, scatenando sfiducia nei confronti del regime hitleriano.
Quello che attendeva l’ignara Dresda era un fenomeno accessorio ai bombardamenti, il feuersturm, frequente negli incendi boschivi: roghi sparsi si concentrano e intensificano, tanto da creare un proprio regime di venti. Nell’estate 1943, sulle case di legno e i palazzi di Amburgo erano piovute tonnellate di bombe incendiarie. Finestre in frantumi, tetti crollati. I piloti avevano visto le fiamme unirsi alle fiamme in basso, fino a creare un calderone di fuoco. Un uragano incandescente si era ingrandito, risucchiando l’ossigeno e soffiando verso l’alto e chi non era morto tra le esplosioni, i crolli, nel rogo era rimasto soffocato anche nei rifugi più sicuri, con i polmoni che aspiravano aria di fuoco o monossido di carbonio. Sulla pelle umana, il fosforo delle bombe incendiarie era inestinguibile, immergendosi si placava ma una volta riemersi tornava a bruciare inesorabilmente. La tempesta di fuoco si verificò in scala minore a Colonia, Francoforte, Brema, Mannheim, Lubecca e altrove. A Dresda, superò ogni orrore.
Quel 13 febbraio era martedì grasso e in una città che si sentiva ancora al riparo dalla guerra la gente e i bambini festeggiavano in maschera l’ultimo giorno di carnevale. Ignoravano che sopra di loro si avvicinavano i giovani aviatori britannici, con le loro paure, le pillole di simpamina per restare svegli, l’ansia di completare la missione e volare via in fretta.
Alle 21.40 le sirene suonarono, inattese. Una formazione nemica era diretta verso la città. I civili scesero ordinatamente nei rifugi. Poco più tardi, chi si era attardato fuori notò il lampo abbagliante dei marcatori, rosso intenso, che indicavano dove sganciare. Poi arrivarono gli scoppi, cupi boati, che si avvicinavano con una progressione terrificante. Di notte 796 bombardieri inglesi e 9 Mosquito segnalatori, la mattina dopo altre 125 tonnellate di bombe sganciate sulle macerie e sui sopravvissuti dai B17 dell’VIII Forza aerea americana.
Si stimano oltre 25mila vittime civili, qualche fonte ne considera molte di più. Si parlò presto di crimine di guerra e il dibatto è proseguito per decenni, McKay ne dà conto, senza tediare i lettori, con la cadenza di un orrore non esibito ma costante, osservato più che raccontato, riferito momento per momento da chi l’ha subito in basso e anche da chi l’ha provocato dall’alto, per ordini superiori, per un dovere militare al quale non avrebbe potuto sottrarsi nemmeno volendo.
Ai testimoni si aggiunge il poi scrittore americano di fantascienza Kurt Vonnegut, al lavoro forzato in città con gli altri prigionieri di guerra, accampati in un mattatoio in disuso. Molti anni dopo, ha fatto di quell’esperienza un capolavoro, il romanzo postmodernista Mattatoio n. 5 o La crociata dei bambini, dove l’insistenza sui piccoli denuncia chi è stato vittima delle azioni degli adulti.
