"È notte anche per me" è un romanzo storico dedicato alla fine dell’Impero romano, che racconta la storia di Galla Placidia, la figlia dell’imperatore Teodosio. Il testo narra le vicende sin dall’adolescenza, quando la ragazza viene presa prigioniera dai Visigoti e si innamora di Ataulfo. I due condividono il sogno di fondare un impero in cui Goti e Romani possano vivere in pace, ma la storia ci insegna che questo non accadde mai.
Visigoti e Romani presero strade diverse e il sangue nuovo germanico servì solo a versare quello antico romano, già cambiato dal gene cristiano.
Morto Ataulfo, Galla Placidia venne restituita a Roma come una donna disonorata, tanto che il fratello imperatore la costrinse a sposare un patrizio ricco per cercare di sanare la vergogna. Il matrimonio di Galla Placidia generò il figlio Valentiniano II, che divenne imperatore ed ella imperatrice madre, fino alla maggiore età di lui.
Gli ultimi capitoli seguono Galla nella sua corsa al potere e nel suo amore per Ezio, l’ultimo generale dell’Impero romano. Galla non vedrà la fine dell’Impero romano, ma sarà testimone delle lotte contro la figlia tradita e sedotta, delle lotte per salvare il trono al figlio Valentiniano e su tutto l’imporsi dell’impero cristiano.
"È notte anche per me" di Maria Roccasalva mostra una donna vera, una donna meravigliosa secondo molti uomini. Fede e lussuria, fede e crudeltà sono le sue caratteristiche, come in ogni epoca d’altro canto.
Ben scritto, ben documentato, racconta un periodo poco conosciuto della storia romana; libro consigliato.
