Giunti edita Davos 1917 (2024, titolo originale Bevor die Welt sich weiterdreht, traduzione di Sara Congregati) di Luca Brosch, pseudonimo di Sebastian Stuertz, autore, musicista e docente di motion design, che vive con la sua famiglia ad Amburgo, e ha pubblicato romanzi, radiodrammi e dischi con vari nomi, basato sulla omonima serie televisiva, evento che presto arriverà anche in Italia, con Dominique Devenport e David Kross.

Novembre 1916.
Mentre in Europa infuriava la Prima guerra mondiale, i passeggeri della Prima Classe erano tutti in viaggio per Davos, stazione climatica di montagna della neutrale Svizzera. Alcuni per sfuggire alla catastrofe mondiale e rifugiarsi nel lusso, altri per curare i loro affari, in certi casi resi dalla guerra più redditizi che mai. Il Vecchio Continente era in fiamme e sul campo di battaglia cadevano a milioni.
Gli industriali, l’alta nobiltà europea, gli artisti e gli intellettuali, cioè l’élite delle parti nemiche si riunivano a Davos. In stanze appartate si facevano servire champagne, accompagnato da ostriche, sigari, cognac, caffè e cioccolato svizzero, mentre discutevano su idee innovative per l’epoca a venire.
Ritenendo di fatto avviata l’era della democrazia, alcuni davano ormai per certa e imminente la fine delle monarchie. Quasi tutti coloro che in modo proficuo avevano investito denaro nell’economia di guerra, temevano il socialismo e il comunismo. Vennero strette alleanze che non conoscevano confini territoriali né orgoglio nazionale, muovendo pedine e preparando il terreno per rimpinguare i conti e non apparire perdenti dopo la guerra, chiunque ne fosse uscito vincitore. A Davos, piccolissima stazione climatica di montagna, in posizione di completo isolamento e neutralità dichiarata, veniva così plasmato il futuro di un continente.
In Terza classe, Johanna Gabathuler, una giovane infermiera proveniente dal fronte occidentale, da Verdun, tornava a casa. La ragazza era incinta di un soldato morto troppo presto, sperava che il nascituro fosse di sesso femminile, in modo da chiamarla Elli.
Scesa dal treno e salutato sua sorella Mathilde, era stata condotta in un convento. La giovane dopo aver partorito, sua sorella e suo padre, direttore della casa di cura di Davos, con l’inganno le avevano sottratto la neonata.
“Tu non hai nessuna figlia.”
Il padre, inoltre, aveva stabilito che Johanna sposasse il gran consigliere Rudolf Thanner, politico e uomo d’affari di successo, che con le sue azioni foraggiava persino la guerra.
La crocerossina, come aveva imparato sin da bambina, avrebbe indossato la maschera allegra, interpretando la parte che assumeva sempre quando metteva piede nella casa di cura. Perché per i pazienti e per gli ospiti esisteva soltanto una Johanna Gabathuler: l’infermiera Johanna, il raggio di sole del Cronwald.
“Johanna sorrideva come una bambola”.
Una giovane madre cerca sua figlia sullo sfondo di un ambiente ostile e ambiguo. Il sanatorio di lusso del dottor Gabathuler è un crogiolo di spie appartenenti alle principali potenze mondiali. Nulla è come sembra e nessuno è davvero chi sostiene di essere, come nei migliori romanzi di Agatha Christie.
“Perfetto. Dobbiamo agire subito. Organizzo l’equipaggiamento. Nel pomeriggio ci andremo a cavallo. Questa consegna non deve lasciare il Paese”.
