“Mi chiamo Gloria Whitehall. Ho ventitré anni. Mio marito è il sergente Robert Whitehall della Seconda divisione di fanteria. Lieta di fare la tua conoscenza”.
Gennaio 1943. Rockport, Massachusetts. Nell’ora più buia della II Guerra Mondiale, la moglie di un soldato che sta combattendo per liberare l’Europa dalla furia disumana nazista scrive a un’altra donna che sta vivendo la sua stessa situazione. Per una volta, pensa Gloria, sarà bellissimo andare alla cassetta postale con la speranza di trovare una lettera che non abbia il timbro postale. Gloria è incinta, si trova al settimo mese di gravidanza e ha già un bambino, Robbie jr., un diavoletto scatenato di appena due anni. L’amica di penna di Gloria si chiama Marguerite (Rita) Vincenzo, ha quasi quarantuno anni e vive a Iowa City, nello Stato dello Iowa, nel Midwest degli Stati Uniti. Suo marito, benché troppo vecchio per andare in guerra, si è arruolato lo stesso subito dopo Pearl Harbour. Il figlio di Rita, Toby, diciottenne, ha appena iniziato l’addestramento di base per la marina. Padre e figlio stanno dando il loro contributo alla causa più importante di tutte: quella per la libertà. Rita, a casa, si prende cura dell’orto e aspetta il ritorno dei suoi due uomini, cercando di trarre il massimo da ciò che ha.
“La gente di qui mi chiama Margie. È una cosa che odio. Sal a volte mi chiama Rita, quindi preferirei usare questo nome. Spero non ti dispiaccia”.
Nel libro dedicato a "tutte le donne che hanno aspettato e a quelle che continuano ad aspettare”, le brave autrici raccontano con sensibilità il “fronte interno” delle donne, le quali, con i compagni in guerra, portano avanti fieramente e coraggiosamente il lavoro più duro e faticoso. Un romanzo, che è un grande successo editoriale, ai primi posti delle classifiche di tutto il mondo, che esalta il potere dell’amicizia. Grazie al legame di amicizia, fatto di confidenze e di parole di conforto tra Gloria e Rita, personalità e carattere diversi, queste mogli di valorosi soldati riescono a superare non solo la solitudine, ma quella sottile e atroce paura di ricevere una lettera che comunichi loro la notizia più terribile. Sembra quasi di vedere volare nel cielo degli Stati Uniti queste lettere, uniche certezze in un mondo dal futuro mai così incerto.
“La tua lettera mi ha aiutata a dimenticare per un attimo le mie preoccupazioni, e ti ringrazio”.
