“Per quanto ne so, nessun soldato britannico che ha prestato servizio sul fronte italiano ha ancora pubblicato un libro sulle sue esperienze”.
È quello che l’allora tenente della Royal Garrison Artillery, Hugh Dalton, ha premesso alla prima edizione del volume With british guns in Italy. Nel febbraio 1919, a guerra finita da poco, vi raccontava i suoi diciotto mesi tra Carso e pianura veneta, ben più quindi di altri reparti alleati nella Grande Guerra. Quel libro, finora solo parzialmente tradotto, è per la prima volta pubblicato in edizione italiana: “Con gli inglesi sul fronte italiano” (pp. 166, con 46 foto e 5 cartine, euro 19,00) a cura di Elvio Rotondo, per i tipi della casa editrice bassanese Itinera Progetti, specializzata in saggistica sul primo conflitto mondiale.
Nella primavera del 1917, segnala Dalton, dieci batterie dell’artiglieria britannica furono inviate in Italia e non fecero poco militarmente, ma la loro storia non è stata ancora raccontata e nemmeno quella delle divisioni britanniche che le raggiunsero sei mesi dopo. La batteria d’assedio di cui era trentenne ufficiale subalterno era stata la prima ad entrare in azione e ad aprire il fuoco. “La prima”, aggiunge,
“anche nella maggior parte delle altre occasioni importanti, salvo che nella ritirata di Caporetto, dove è stata invece l’ultima ad abbandonare il campo”.
Come segnala utilmente Paolo Pozzato, nella sua introduzione, si tratta finalmente della versione italiana integrale del diario di guerra di un alleato che ha vissuto la nostra stessa esperienza, ha constatato i nostri difetti in quel conflitto, ma riconosce il nostro sforzo di superarli, ove non vi abbia collaborato direttamente.
Il giudizio del tenente è tanto comprensivo, da risultare nettamente controcorrente rispetto alla disistima generale dei combattenti franco-britannici. Gli anglofrancesi ritenevano il fronte italiano nettamente secondario e ciononostante, o forse proprio per questo, consideravano l’Italia un “vuoto a perdere” da cui non aspettarsi molto ed al quale concedere ancora meno. Perfino peggio andava per i nostri nemici austriaci: i loro alleati tedeschi lamentavano d’essere costretti a combattere
“legati a un cadavere”.
Importante il giudizio di Hugh Dalton, che non era un ufficiale qualsiasi ed è stato successivamente un politico inglese di primo piano. Nato in Galles nel 1887, cresciuto a corte, studente a Eton e Cambridge, è stato ministro dell’economia di guerra nel Governo Churchill e cancelliere dello Scacchiere dal 1945 al 1947. Tornando all’esperienza militare italiana, è validissima la sua interpretazione delle tre caratteristiche sorprendenti della guerra sul nostro fronte: la carenza di munizioni, l’enorme forza naturale di tutte le posizioni austriache, il lavoro dei genieri grigioverdi.
La presenza in Italia di questo ufficiale e dei suoi cannonieri precede quindi il collasso di Caporetto. Ed anche la conseguente ritirata al Piave, che invece vide le forze alleate, inviate a sostegno, mantenersi prudentemente dietro la linea del Mincio. I loro Comandi temevano una contaminazione delle truppe col sedicente “sciopero militare” denunciato dal generalissimo Cadorna, un presunto crollo della tenuta combattiva che poteva avere coinvolto anche le loro batterie e di cui queste erano state comunque testimoni dirette.
Mentre il grosso delle undici divisioni del contingente inglese giunte in soccorso dell’Italia attese a debita distanza fino a novembre 1917 inoltrato, quando fu chiaro che la linea italiana avrebbe retto all’offensiva nemica, la batteria di Hugh Dalton era entrata in linea sul Carso dall’inverno precedente, per supplire alle carenze della nostra artiglieria pesante.
Sull’Isonzo, il supporto campale alle unità di fanteria era del tutto insufficiente a vincere le fortificazioni, soprattutto i reticolati. L’essersi affidati alla produzione Krupp si rivelò fallimentare quando la Germania, di fronte al mancato intervento al suo fianco, bloccò ovviamente le forniture. A quel punto, l’aver dovuto adattare munizionamento Ansaldo sui pezzi Krupp sarà la concausa di alcuni rovesci clamorosi, il fallimento all’Ortigara su tutti. Se Francia ed Inghilterra volevano che la pressione sul fronte isontino continuasse, dovevano fornire agli italiani le batterie di medio e grosso calibro di cui mancavano o l’Austria avrebbe potuto congelare quel teatro di operazioni, invece di subire il voluto logoramento che ne avrebbe affrettato la fine.
Non c’è spazio per entrare nel dettaglio di “Con gli inglesi sul fronte italiano”, di cui però si può raccomandare la lettura – agile e ricca di spunti interessanti – a tutti gli appassionati cultori di storia militare e delle vicende della Grande Guerra, in particolare.
