“Anna delle cinque città” (Elliot 2016, titolo originale Anna Of The Five Towns, traduzione di Beatrice Boffito Serra) è il romanzo dello scrittore inglese Arnold Bennett ((Hanley, 27 maggio 1867 - Londra, 27 marzo 1931) iniziato nel 1896 e pubblicato nel settembre 1902, riedito ora dalla casa editrice romana.
La fulgida e leggiadra figura femminile di Anna Tellwright, illumina il volume del prolifico e poliedrico autore, saggista, memorialista, critico e conferenziere che apre la serie delle “Cinque Città” ambientato nella terra natale di Bennett, quella parte dello Staffordshire chiamata “Potteries” (Terrecotte), dalle sue fabbriche, o anche “Five Towns” (le Cinque Città). I Tellwright abitavano a Bursley da un anno ma finora nessun visitatore aveva varcato la loro soglia. Mr Ephraim Tellwright, autocrate ricco e potente, che si era ritirato dagli affari da molto tempo e aveva rinunciato all’attività religiosa (era class-leader di una società metodista di wesleyani), era tornato nella città dei suoi avi. La famiglia, composta dalla figlia maggiore Anna e dalla piccola Agnes, abitava a Manor Terrace, a Bleakridge, il più bel quartiere di Bursley. Quella casa a due piani, di mattoni gialli con un giardino retrostante lungo e stretto, era la dimora di un uomo taccagno anche dal punto di vista dei sentimenti. Infatti Tellwright

Autorità indiscussa nel campo degli affari, Mr Tellwright in verità non era mai stato molto infiammato né dal lato dottrinale né da quello spirituale del metodismo, ma
“era grande nella finanza della salvezza, quell’interminabile alternarsi di debiti estinti e riaccesi che procura ai non conformisti emozioni senza fine”
Era soprattutto Anna, “la figlia dell’avaro”, a subire le angherie morali e materiali del dispotico padre. Nonostante ciò le peggiori tirannie paterne non avevano spento in Anna il senso del dovere verso di lui e forse senza nemmeno accorgersene, la ventunenne aveva disprezzato l’amore e le effusioni dei sessi. Ora però che Anna si mostrava interessata nei confronti di Henry Mynors, bello, intelligente, pilastro dell’industria locale e della cappella wesleyana, si accorgeva che finora si era sbagliata del tutto. Non erano gli innamorati da disprezzare ma il suo sciocco e superbo comportamento.
“Come era stato miserabilmente ristretto e torbido il corso della sua vita, oscurato dalla minaccia d’esserlo sempre, e come adesso, sgorgava caldo, pieno e impetuoso, schiudendole orizzonti nuovi e deliziosi!”
Così si sentiva adesso Anna, l’ascetica, l’impetuosa, la prosaica, l’impassibile, diventata maggiorenne e quindi in possesso di una cospicua eredità proveniente dal nonno materno che il padre finora aveva saggiamente amministrato per lei e che avrebbe continuato ad amministrare per espresso volere della sua sottomessa figlia.

Bennett appartenente alla corrente realista inglese di George Moore e influenzato dal naturalismo francese conosciuto grazie ad una decennale permanenza in Francia, qui ritrae un mondo che conosceva molto bene. È l’universo malinconico, grigio (a causa delle tante fonderie) e ristretto della regione industriale dello Staffordshire e dell’austera comunità wesleyana nel quale le donne, che siano mogli, madri, figlie o sorelle nascono e crescono schiave del dovere, abituate a negarsi qualsiasi moto dell’anima, mentre gli uomini si occupano delle industrie. Ed è proprio il caso di Anna Tellwright, la quale formata da tradizioni di austerità e dalla sua severa coscienza, non si era mai permessa di sognare la possibilità di una fuga dal servaggio paterno.
